Owner description: Located in the heart of modern China and the site for massive parades and rallies, this was the site when in 1949, from a rostrum on the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Chairman Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

Interesting from an historical perspective, and it's HUGE, but a bit ho-hum. After all, it's only a town square. Walk through it, stand behind the traffic barriers and try to get a decent shot of Mao's photo. (You can probably find a better shot on Google). Don't spend too much time there - your time is better spent in the Forbidden City

We took a group of high school students there, guided by a local guide who was very knowledgeable. This is one of the places where every Chinese travels at least once in their life to take a selfie in front of the huge Mao Tse Tung Memorial...I tried to imagine what this huge square must have been like when tanks rolled up years ago to confront all those student protesters...goose bumps

The immense public square in the heart of Beijing. Immediately south of the Forbidden City, bordered by the Great Hall of the People and the National Museum of China on the east and west sides with a vibrant shopping district to its immediate south this
is an area you can spend days around. The Monuments to the People's Heroes and Mao Zedong's Mausoleum are both located on the square itself.

Unfortunately we couldn’t walk on the square as there was some political event taken place. We learned a few days later that Kim Jung Un was there for a meeting.
