You can get the bus No. 01 from downtown (Qianmen) to go there. The 1st departs from Qianmen to Baidaling is on 7:30am. The 1st back to downtown is on 12:00 noon.

Great experience, we went with a group of high school students and enjoyed the walk on the great wall, tons of shops and photo ops, plus we had blue sky's that day, perfect trip to get away from Beijing's smog cloud

Do you like people? Do you like a lot of people? Do you like stairs? A lot of stairs? Steep smooth stone ramps? Once you get past the first couple of inclines the crowd thins out but if you aren't comfortable being tightly jammed in a confined space with people taking selfies the first bit may be stressful. Definitely wear athletic / grippy footwear and be in good shape, as it is constant stairs and ramps, but the views are spectacular and it is still amazing. Mutianyu is a good option if you want fewer crowds and stairs but I don't regret doing Badaling as well. Allow extra time in line for the cable car coming back down - I almost missed my bus back to town.
