Walked in on that night around 8 just to try out this new place.
The Bar on 80th floor was fully booked, so was The Lounge. But I was really hungry and unfortunately there are only 4 food items on the menu of the bar....so i decided to eat at The Lounge.
The staff tried to find a table which reservation hasn't come yet. However, i found out that night (since i stayed up till 10pm - closing to their closed time) that the table indeed hadn't been reserved and that was only a lie to us, the guests.
The food comes vey slowly. I had a Poached Prawn salad which appears to be the only attractive salad on the menu. but it was totally a mess. no flavor at all..
then i had a spaghetti but indeed i ordered risotto at the beginning and the staff was just realizing they had run out of the dish 15 mins after i finished my starter...the taste of the spaghetti was simply more disappointing.
Then desert was okay, the choco tartar (pic).

This review is for The Lounge only. We didn't stay at the hotel, but we went to The Lounge on the 80th floor for afternoon tea and desserts. I went there on Sunday with three expat friends and a two year old. The decoration was really nice. I gave four stars for the atmosphere. The lemon grass cheese cake had delicate flavors, which I very much enjoyed.

Knowing that The Lounge is a part of a five-star hotel, I was shocked at the level of the service we received. There were several poor service incidents within about 1.5 hours that we were there. First, it was when I was taking a little long to choose the tea, while my friends already placed their orders. Normally, in Thailand, in this situation, the waitstaff would wait for my order patiently without saying a word. And I would tell them to come back later, if I really need more time to decide. In the US, the waitstaff usually politely asks with a smile "Do you need more time?" or "Should I get started with other orders first and come back?". But guess what the waitress at this 5-star hotel did? She simply turned her back and walked away from me without saying a word. Second, when my friend tried to ask someone to warm the scones, there was no waitstaff around to help us. This is unusual for a lounge in a 5-star hotel. Normally, the waitstaff will keep their eyes on the guests, in case they need anything. Third, there was no waitstaff to pour the tea for us. This is a very small thing. But very small details differentiate the 5-star experience from the 3 to 1-star experience. Forth, as my friend and I walked out of the washroom to go back to our table, a waitress walked past us very closely that I my shoulder almost touched hers. In other 5-star hotels, the waitstaff would stop, yield, and let the guest pass first. Perhaps this new hotel was rush to open and forgot to train their staff.

If you don't care about poor service, I recommend this place so that you can say that you went to the tallest building in Beijing.

Even though I am very glad to hear that you did like the atmosphere and environment on our 80th floor, I sincerely would like to apologize for the disappointed service experience you encountered. Looks like that we do have to fine tune our services. I have personally discussed this incident with our department head and our training manager to apply additional training to our employees. This is to ensure that we do improve our service and as well as to ensure that our guests receive a complete satisfying experience at The Lounge on our 80th floor.

I hope that you visit us again and let us show you the improvements we did.

This hotel just opened just a week before I stayed there. My main impression was that the physical facilities were excellent and luxurious -- living up fully to the Shangri-La name -- but that the service setup leaves something to be desired.

Problems that I encountered were as follows:
(1) The English level of the staff was not so high. I was left with the impression that (rich) Chinese clients were the main focus. Two examples of bad communication: (a) Although I had just checked in for three nights, the man at the front desk asked me, "When are you leaving tomorrow?" (b) When I went to inspect the gym and pool facilities, the woman staff member shouted at me, "You cannot go there!" even after I had explained to her that I was a guest.

(2) No welcome drink at the 80F Observation bar was offered to me although it was clearly mentioned in my package.

(3) The breakfast setup was confusing, with an a la carte menu stating individual prices even though the breakfast was supposed to be complimentary (I was not charged anything in the end). There was no explanation whether only one item could be ordered or several. They should revert to the buffet style used in all other Shangri-La hotels I have stayed in.

(4) There was no attempt to silence or quieten Chinese businessmen letting their mobile phones ring and shouting into them during the breakfast hour. I realize that Chinese manners in this respect do not match that of other countries (especially Japan), but it seemed unbefitting for this to be happening in a 5-star hotel with an international clientele.

(5) Upon checking out, the bill was denominated in RMB, but when I checked my credit card bill online one week later, the bill was denominated in my local currency, adding a percentage point or two to the total amount. Beware of this scam when using Shangri-La hotels in China (it happened at the Beijing Upper East Traders Hotel as well).

(6) There are prostitutes soliciting around the entrance of the hotel (and the nearby Kerry Hotel, Traders Hotel and China World Hotel) in the evening and night. I was chased by two women yelling, "Uncle! Uncle! You want spend nice night?"

(7) Also don't use the laundry services -- they are way overpriced! You could probably buy new clothes in a Beijing store for what they charge for individual items. I was charged around $5 for each piece of underwear to be washed.

(8) There is usually no taxi waiting outside the front entrance, and it takes some time for one to come. Also, many Beijing taxi drivers come from outside the city so are not familiar with local place names. I tried to go to a well-visited tourist spot (Wudaoying Hutong) near the Lama Temple, and had even printed out a Google Map in Chinese, but the taxi driver could not figure out where it was, even with the help of the hotel bellboy. I ended up taking the subway. (Granted that Shangri-La cannot vet the taxi drivers who come).

That being said, this is one of the only hotels in Beijing that allows you to view the Forbidden City from your room (in clear weather). But you don't need to spend all the extra money and go through the hassle just for that ... just go to the 79-80F bar (they even have telescopes).

I understand your concern in regards to the credit card charge, the hotel however will always only charge the amount stated on your invoice to the credit card. The difference lies in the conversion rate by the bank after our transaction.

My girlfriend and I just wrapped up a 5-day stay at this brand new hotel (we arrived on the 5th day); here’s the review.

Location
Located in the new, very tall China World Tower 3, which is right between the Traders Hotel and the Kerry Centre Hotel. Hotel lobby faces the 3rd ring road.

Hotel style
As you can imagine from above, this hotel‘s style is basically a high-rise office tower that is partially occupied by the hotel. The hotel has a lobby entrance on the 1st floor and occupies the 3rd and 4th floors, and floors 64 through 80. Note, that to return to your guest room, you must board an elevator in the 1st floor lobby and travel up to the 64th “Residence Foyer” first. Upon arrival to floor 64, must exit the elevator only to walk a short distance to another elevator bank that can bring you to the guest room floors (floors 64 through 78). The long point here is that those of you who like the “flatness” of say the Jianguo Hotel (or even China World) and are not thrilled with the thought of changing elevators each time you return to the room, you may not like this so much. And yes, the elevators from floor 64 to your guestroom require your key to be inserted in order to press the button to your floor.

Room
Note that the hotel only had one room style available (suites were not finished yet – November they say) and the attached photos show that room which I believe was the “Deluxe” room. The room is nice (as you would expect from Shangri la). Entry is a long foyer/hallway leading to the bedroom and passes by another (somewhat dark) hallway that leads to the bathroom, closets and a small vanity table/mirror with stool (hair dryer found here). Typical Shangri La comfortable bed and furnishings replete with flat-screen tv and dvd player. The mural behind the bed (as shown in the picture) is definitely special and makes a great ambiance. If I had one complaint here is that the lighting in the room is quite inflexible…have two controls over lighting which really give you an “all or nothing” feeling with regards to controlling your room’s lighting; I recollect other hotels in Beijing being more “wired” and if that is your cup of tea, be warned that this aspect of the room is uninspiring. Yes, there are lamps but I am not a lamp person especially when I have to get up from the bed to turn off that lamp.

80th Floor Bar / Tea areas
The 80th floor has a couple of areas to have tea or alcohol: one a tea/coffee lounge – non-smoking and opens am to late closing with the other a bar/lounge - smoking currently allowed and opens after 12 noon. Both are attractive and have large floor to ceiling windows that provide a view – some even have telescopes set up on tripods that allow those to use this as an observation point. I personally prefer the China World or even Kerry Centre lobby bars to these but perhaps other travelers prefer the newer, western feel that this strives to achieve…

Swimming Pool / Exercise Room
Nice, but not as nice as other Shangri La hotels that I have stayed and nothing out-of-the ordinary; maybe your viewpoint will differ.

Overall, the hotel was typical Shangri-La: great service and comfortable. I am a devout Shangri La patron and am most comfortable in the Guo Mao area of Beijing. I am not crazy about 2 elevators to return to my room but definitely like to stay in a newer room and will return as this is the newest Shangri La room in that area.
