We spent 4 nights at the Mara Sarova at the end of a 14-day safari trip.
The camp is situated within the Masai Mara boundaries but quiet a distance from the Mara River. The latter cannot be reached on a normal morning or evening game drive. It requires a full-day trip.
Once in the camp (jungle like garden) the feeling of being in the Masai Mara disappears somewhat. The camp is completely disclosed from typical Masai Mara scenery.
All are tent-like rooms with a add-on for the shower. Tents are rather small and furnished with basics. The room and bathroom, the terrace furniture etc. all gave the impression that it was in need of some renovations. 'Shaby' would perhaps be a more correct word.
Staff were extremely friendly and helpfull. When one morning we got back too late from a game drive for breakfast, the staff did its utmost to make sure we got breakfast afterall.
The buffets, although plenty and nicely presented, are for more than 90% oriental orientated (lots (read: too much) of indian food). Although open to all kinds of food, I felt this to be exaggerated.
The restaurant (show-cooking corners) are in urgent need of some renovation. We were told however by the staff that a renovation is foreseen for october and thus probably solves this particular point.

If you want to see animals, location is very close. Staying in modern tents with own bathroom. surroundings very clean, swimming pool. In our price we had full board with three meals. Food was excellent, plenty to choose from. service was excellent. Good value with accomodation and meals. Would go back and recomend if wanting to see Masai mara reserve. Most expensive was entry to reserve, non residents pay twice as much. Plus the roads are very rough

I returned to this lodge after a gap of almost 20 years! However, all the changes seemed to be for the better... we were upgraded to club tents which were pure luxury! There is a small private area outside the tent and tents are really spacious inside; and equipped with electrical amenities / work table / separate bathrooms and toilets / great showers with HOT water; whilst retaining its 'bush' appeal... Plus the tents have their own ceiling fans which we didnt use asit was quite cold! Excellently landscaped, one can see Dik-dik and other small animals inside the lodge area (which is huge), and the walk to the dining area from the tent is through dense foliage... the pool area and garden is well maintained... food was great... staff were friendly and helpful - within a few degrees of good and great - as anywhere else in Kenya / East Africa... we'll be back again for sure!

We had some concerns about what a "tent camp" meant. Not to worry; this is not backpacking in the wild with a tent on your back. Imagine a "tent" with hardwood floors, a full-size bed, double vanity, and tiled shower. The food selection and quality were very good, and you could spend time at the pool or the bar if you were looking for something to do between game drives.

This camp is conveniently located at the edge of the Mara, and in a few minutes we were in among the animals. It was a great location and a very fun safari.

Notes to travelers (especially those who have not been to Africa):
1. This is a game camp, not an amusement park. You are in the middle of a wild area - you are a guest in one of Mother Nature's best playgrounds. So, while the large animals are kept out by an electric fence, other small ones may be lingering around. And, yes, there are bugs, although we did not feel it was a significant issue. Bring bug spray if such things bother you.
2. This is a self-sufficient camp. They provide their own electricity and utilities, and the food comes in by truck. You should not expect that everything is going to be perfect under those circumstances. To save energy, they turn off all electricity during the afternoon game drive and from midnight to 4 am. If you require pampering and all the finest amenities - go someplace else. You will be comfortable here, and safe, but this is not a spa.
