The Egyptologist, Mrs Manar Rashad, told us this church is not built on any foundation, it is merely placed on rocks and steel. Also very interesting that there is a synagogue in the area which is not used for worshipping as there is no community in the area to worship there, yet it is kept in pristine condition.

Had questions running in my mind as to how a church can hang... found the answer when I went and saw with my eyes. Take time and explore...

The hanging church was truly something to behold and should be included in every visitor’s itinerary.

The Hanging Church gets its name because it is built in the air, anchored on the remains of the old Roman wall. It was a lot more atmospheric before they put electric lights in it, but still worth the visit to sample the Coptic flavor.
