Good and bad!

Review of Clover Hotel
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 July 2012
The hotel "forgot" to pick us up so we took a taxi organised by the information place at the airport - she rang them but either couldn't get them or got the bums rush - @ a cost of $10 but she told us the hotel shoud re-emburse us. The room is on the 6th floor via very slow lift and huge - plastic wood on the floor, 2 single beds too short for my 6ft 4 husband, very small TV on a table, electric jug screwed to another table, ugly blind covering a smallish window with a view which is quite interesting but the blind is not meant to be drawn & is re-drawn when we leave the room. It is summer so very hot & therefore the fact that the hot water is not on until the evening isn't really an issue - the breakfast is Chinese or cold fried eggs, sugar sweet bread for toast & sugar sweet milk if you use it in coffee/tea and fruit. At night there are more waiters than we 2 lonely diners - only did it once! Although cheap by western standards, it is not good food by any standards. I remember this hotel - it is the one I often stayed in while working in China in the 80s so it comes as no surprise to find it is run by Chinese! On the plus side they are very helpful - three young men entered our room without knocking 5 minutes after we arrived bearing a plate f sliced watermelon & apple (still with core attached) because they were very sorry we had "wasted our time" at the airport. Very near the Shwedagon Pagoda & park/lake & if like us, you like a challange, you can walk into town. Excellent street stall Maw Haw Mogoda opposite where we got much better food for half the price.

Room Tip: We didn't ask for anything but got a room on the 6th floor with a window with a view -...

Stayed here 3 nights. Booked from Agoda. Taxi from airport to here cost 8000 kyat without air cond. You can pay in US$ also The money exchange at airport has good rates. But remember to keep the receipt so you can exchange back to US$ at airport when you return.Rate was 850kyat to a dollar buying and 860kyat selling.Returning to airport , taxi cost only 5,000 kyat with air cond. Hotel is very near Japanese embassy. Most taxi driver know this place but not Clover. Taxi to downtown cost about 2000 kyat. Rooms are very clean and buffet breafast is included. Room service is expensive. Fried rice will cost you 5,000kyat. So better to eat outside. Bowl of noodle outside is only 1,000kyat.Loved the free wifi. There is no international roaming in Myanmar so we are out of touch when we are here. Service at hotel is fantastic. They really are good. Will definitely stay here again.

Clover is located close to Shegadon Pagoda, but a bit far from the city and waterfront area. We checked in after requesting a Pagoda view room and were relegated to the first floor, which basically has no windows. We paid for the "Superior Room" but I am not sure why you would have a superior room with NO view... nothing. So it was a bit prison-ish. We also requested a double bed, but got two singles. Not the end of the world but for $73 (through agoda), you would expect a bit better. Not sure why you take reservations for rooms you do not have available. It was clean, kept 24 hour power, and had a good wifi connection to help with upcoming plans out of Yangon. The restaurant does have a nice view of the pagoda on the 7th floor also. Hotel asked for $30 for airport transfer, which is OUTRAGEOUS considering you can pay $8 walking out of the airport. They also charge $1 for city maps, which again, for $70+ seems ridiculous. Overall, I think this place exists because it is one of the few that you can book through agoda and pay with credit card. As more come online, I think this one will be weeded out. Mainly because it is very stale and does not make you feel like you are in Myanmar at all.

Room tip: Ensure you have a Pagoda view... or at least on a high floor.

Hi

the hotel is clean, easily accessible, very near to the Shwezgon pagoda and the local lake. The staff is decent and helpful. the hotel offers food but no vegeterian options. The staff is helpful/friendly and try to answer your questions/request. This is a strictly functional hotel and a good choice for solo travellers/friends as opposed to families.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Clover Hotel. The room was very big and the beds are great. Breakfast was ok, nothing really spectacular . Also a big plus is the fast internet and the Shwedagon-Pagode nearby. There is also a great park in walking distance. I also enjoyed the little authentic Myamnmar Restaurant just down the street. The greatest thing about the hotel was the staff at the reception. The guys where so helpful and extremly friendly. All wishes I had they tried to solve for me. I can just congratulate the owner of the hotel for such excellent staff. Next time in Yangoon I will definitely stay again at the Clover hotel
