Hotel Needs Renovation

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Jan 2013via mobile
This hotel is quite old and expensive for the quality (80usd). they were performing some renovation work on the outside but would need to be renovated inside as well.
We had a leak in our bathroom, some water falling above the toilets.

As a number of the reviews here have noted, this hotel is quite tired and could desperately use a coat of paint and some TLC. We travelled with a group tour and a number of people commented on how nice the rooms were, but we had one of the smaller ones at the back and it REEKED of cigarettes and there was nothing we could do to fix it. Bathroom was also pretty basic, but adequate.

On the positive side, it was really conveniently located with Scotts Market just around the corner. Plus the guys at reception were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them – from negotiating taxis on our behalf to calling their friends to see whether a concert we were going to was still running. They also remembered us when we returned to the hotel a couple of weeks later.

Room tip: Ask for a non smoking room

I had a reasonably good experience with the Yuzana Garden Hotel. I stayed in another Yangon hotel (see my review of that hotel) and it was terrible. I definitely preferred the Yuzana Garden over that one (but strangely enough, the other inferior hotel seems to have better reviews on Trip Advisor). As another reviewer noted, there are four presidential suites and I stayed in one: room 201. The other presidential suite on the second floor is definitely not a good choice with cheap furniture and no safe. Room 201 is good, but I also stayed in room 308 which is just as big as a presidential suite, but not as expensive.

I found the staff to be generally quite good. The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful. And the rooms were kept clean. Sure the dining area is dark and depressing, but the other hotel in Yangon I reviewed didn't even have a proper dining area. The Yuzana Garden could definitely stand some improvements, but hotels in Yangon can be pretty dicey. You can do better, but you can definitely do hugely worse. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest the Yuzana Garden Hotel.

Room tip: Room 308 is definitely a really good choice.

We stayed here at the beginning and end of trip since higher class hotels were all full. Location is good - near some decent cafes and the big market. Not sure why they call it "garden" since there wasn't one. Rooms are huge but we didn't even use the "living area." Water pressure varied by time of day fro some reason. Staff was fine. Breakfast buffet was better than average. Overall, fine but wouldn't chose to stay there again.

We were booked here two different nights (thus two different rooms) by Myanmar Delight during our November trip. No--don't stay here! It feels like former Soviet Union meets 'banana republic'. We liked being able to walk to Shwedagon Pagoda but with taxis about 2000 kyat a pop, that's no reason to stay here. The A/C worked. Scaffolding everywhere but no workers. Hallways loud. Just plain dirty--the kind of dirt that is probably impossible to remove. We paid $105/night and Alamanda at $120/night was way more appealing and more than worth the $15/differential.

Stayed at Yuzana Garden for a couple of days largely because it was the only Rangoon hotel which could accept a fairly late reservation. We had "de-luxe" rooms, which were adequate, and clean, with good bathroom facilities and amenities. Staff attitudes were very mixed, with some staff going out of their way to be helpful, and others not bothering at all. The latter attitude is new in Burma and arises perhaps from the recent influx of tourists. Restaurant staff and bell boys were particularly welcoming, and the buffet style breakfast was OK.

Other reviewers have commented on variability of the Wifi. Yes - it is variable, and the hotel charges - in my case 1,000 kyats ($1.20) per hour. This is not a lot of money, but I haven't come across any other hotel in Burma which charges for Wifi access in a public area (reception). Phone call costs are also ridiculous - I was chaged 11,000 kyats ($13) for 2 local phone calls.

Overall, an OK 3 star hotel, but at $120 per night, I think better options are available - even at this peak time. Location is good for those who wish to be right downtown - otherwise there are more pleasant environs in Rangoon.
