Poppy's on the Lagoon
Ranked #24 of 47 Hotels in Port Vila
Reviewed 29 January 2012

I would definitely go back to Vanuatu again just to stay at Poppy's! We stayed for 7 nights, lovely place, friendly staff, beautiful lagoon, really yummy and enjoyable food, well appointed rooms and centrally located only a 15min walk into Port Vila (the fresh food markets were a hit with us - fresh tropical fruit every day). We stayed in the Lagoon Front spa bungalows which had a spa, kitchenette, comfortable beds and a spacious room which was serviced daily. Poppys has two pools (family and adult) and free hire of canoes/kayaks to paddle around the lagoon. The table on the lagoon front was a favourite for us at meal times and Poppys signature dish (banana pancakes) were amazing for breakfast.
An Aussie expat runs the place and is full of good suggestions/ ideas on what to see and do in Vanuatu, always very friendly and helpful. We had a great stay!

I have read the other reviews at Poppy's and was quite shocked. We loved Poppys, the people the rooms (so what if you have to walk up or down stairs) the food was great (who cares if its slow, your on holiday) you are on Island time and its great, no rushing around. We went one step further at Poppys and had our Wedding there. Gary and Lorna are wonderful people and were so helpful. We would go back in a second if we could. If you want a relaxing holiday with Fab staff, poppys is the place. If you want perfection maybe stay at home by yourself? twelve of us stayed at Poppys in 6 different rooms all over the resort and we all loved it. Dont change a thing guys...........................

Phones in the resort don't work, if you want room service you have to walk down a huge flight of stairs.

If you order breakfast be prepared to wait a long time and your food not properly cooked.

No privacy in the rooms at all.

No aircon I don't recommend staying here in the middle of summer.

Tribe of men at the top of the potholed step long driveway who yell stuff at you if you get back to the resort late.

Gardens are really well maintained.

Overall I do not recommend staying here.

We thank all our guests for taking the time to post reviews whatever they contain. Given that the review contained negative comments we think appropriate that we take the time to respond.

1. We have checked the phones in all rooms and found them to be in proper working order.

2. As soon as this guest made his complaint about breakfast, the breakfast was replaced promptly to his satisfaction and with our apology. We regret that the guest was unsatisfied by his breakfast and this is an incident that we have raised with our kitchen staff.

3. The Lagoon View Studios are located higher in the resort – to get the view. Accordingly, the path to them is inevitably steeper. They represent the value end of the range of accommodation that we offer. They do share a wall with the neighbouring rooms. Other options do not, eg our standalone bungalows (in the adults only area), or our suites and villas.

4. All decisions to accommodate tourism in the resort are made under close ethical and ecological scrutiny by the owners and management. The resort supports and funds the education of all employees and their children. The garden is chemical free. All buildings are specifically designed to take advantage of the cooling breezes with ceiling fans in place. A conscious decision not to install air-conditioning has been made on ecological grounds.

5. The road to the entrance of Poppys resort is a public road not our private driveway. Vanuatu is a developing country and does not always enjoy good roads. At the moment there are pot holes near the resort, as there are near every resort from time. We have been pressing for them to be fixed but do not have control over that timetable.

We arrived for a 3 day stay just after New Years after having been in another nearby hotel resort for the previous 5 days. Our first impressions were very rollercoaster. The trip into Poppys resort is surrounded passes near to some quite run-down shanty-towns, and the access road is in an appalling state as well. Our first impressions were ones of worry that the place would not be up to scratch. How wrong we were, because as soon as you get into Poppys you change your mind. It is extremely well kept- the gardens are well manicured, the pool is clean, and the village-like layout of the apartments gives this place a real Vanuatu feel.

The day we arrived, unfortunately the weather turned extremely hot, still and humid. It was a nice relief to get a complementary glass of lime drink while we signed in. The Australian expat Gary was extremely welcoming and had some very good information for us, far more than we ever got from the previous hotel. He recommended a restaurant (Vila Chaumieres) to go to that evening, and even booked us a table. We were not disappointed, it was great.

We had booked a garden view bungalow, room 18. The room was great, with flowers everywhere, neatly rolled towels, and the general presentation was lovely. To our dismay, it did not have any air conditioning. This was an oversight on our part, we had assumed a fan would be enough. The bungalow had high ceilings with 2 fans- 1 over the kitchen area and 1 over the bed. Unfortunately, the fans are so high up, and so underpowered, they cannot overcome the intense dead heat in the bungalow. All the windows have fly screens and big venetian blinds style louvres, but in order to have any privacy, you need to close them over, which limits any airflow in the place. It would not matter in our case, because there was not a puff of wind. The room also had a welcome brochure which we must say was the most informative booklet we have ever seen in a hotel. It was really great, and explained lots of things to us such as tipping, towels, transport, security of your belongings, internet etc.

On day 2 we reported this to reception and to their credit, they bought a tower fan for the 2nd and 3rd nights and left it in our room. This made a huge difference but alas it wasnt quite enough for us- we are used to a much more temperate climate! Such a speedy response to a request like that is really something to remark about, you would not get that in many other places.

The resort has great food for breakfast and/or lunch. Apart from quite undercooked fried eggs (just ask them to cook them a little longer if you dont like them runny), the food was really good and very reasonably priced. They also have a good selection of DVDs for 200Vatu a night which we availed of on all nights after we came back from town. We did a day tour on day 2 and thankfully they had a safety deposit box in the office which gave us peace of mind.

A few other minor negative points:
** While not at all the fault of Poppys, there were packs of local dogs barking/fighting nearby in the dead of night on 2 of the nights. This was not at all pleasant.
** Also, a cockerel lives nearby and seems to think that its dawn at 2:30am- very annoying
** We got back from dinner quite late on the first night and turned on the porch light to see the key in the lock. To our shock, something big ruffled in the bushes next to us, it gave us a real fright. It was the night security man who had decided to have a sleep in the bushes next to our bungalow porch. He did not instill much confidence in us after that, especially considering there are people living in poverty only 5 minutes away. We hope we don't lose him his job by mentioning this but its important that night security men can be relied upon.
** When we went to pay for our room service on debit card, they wouldnt put it through on debit, only on credit. They also wanted to whack a percentage fee on top of that which isnt really fair. Apparently the banks charge them a fee for transactions but so do our Aussie banks, essentially forcing us to pay double fees. Not good.
** We both got eaten alive by mosquitoes while sitting by the adult pool, though this happens anywhere in Port Vila really. Not Poppys fault at all, just remember to bring repellent!
** The mattress was not all that great. Our previous hotel had pocket springs and latex layer, which is SO comfortable. This one was quite a firm, old style mattress which meant you feel every jolt if your partner moves at all. Not a big deal, but hey its nice to have high hopes!

Overall, if you can handle dead heat and humidity, and despite the negatives listed, we would recommend this place. If you rely heavily on air conditioning to get a decent nights sleep, then this place is definitely not for you, which is a shame, as they make a really good effort to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Room Tip: There appears to be no air conditioning, and the fans are not great.

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at Poppy's on the Lagoon. We were assigned unit # 26 which is at the very end of the Lagoon View Studio block and next to the Melanesian Tour Bus premises.
I totally concur with Lyrebird6 comments regarding the noise from the tour buses...it was very intrusive and also the diesel exhaust fumes were unpleasant.
The bus company uses Poppy's drive as if it were theirs and they also park their vehicles in the car space outside unit # 26 compounding the noise and exhaust fumes.
Although I tried to change rooms on the first day this was not possible without paying a surcharge so we decided to stay in #26 and we were sorry we did this by the end of our stay.
Other aspects of Poppy's were very positive. The location is good, the cafe provide quite good food but it's time the kayaks were replaced with new kayaks though.

Room Tip: if you choose the Lagoon View Studios request a unit on the top floor and in the block furthest from...

To all our lovely and supportive guests who have stayed or who intend to stay at Poppys on the Lagoon, please be assured we have spoken to Ray and Glenda of Melanesian Tours and asked them to stop driving their buses so close to the Studios section of the resort. As past guests will know, Ray and Glenda actually live right next door to Poppys on the Lagoon, and have been parking their buses at their own house for some time now. We have had recent meetings with them and believe they now understand the impact this has on guests. The buses are not permitted to enter into the grounds of the resort unless they are bringing in guests or picking up guests for airport transfers and we are actively encouraging and supporting any move by Melanesian Tours to find more suitable premises for parking their buses overnight. Having said that, they have been next door to Poppys on the Lagoon for more than 8 years, so sometimes it may be that the issue attracts more attention than it deserves.
