In a country such as Papua New Guinea one should expect to see mosquitoes but not swarms in the lobby. The staff did recognise my PC club status but the only benefit was seriously slow internet and a free drinks voucher. The hotel itself is rather dated but a new holiday inn is being built next door so this should offer nicer surroundings for the future. The rooms are nice, large and clean although the bathroom was grubby. Security is good and the hotel seems safe although it did seem at the time that locals are living in some rooms permanently, the kids school clothes drying on the balcony were a give away. The staff are friendly, polite and helpful. The food is of a good standard and room service is fast.

For a night out with good food and great bar visit the Royal Yacht Club.

All in all if I were to visit again I would look at another hotel but would consider the new holiday inn once built.

Room tip: Avoid the apartments, get a high room in the block

OK, sorry. Truth is, they put us up here whenever we go to POM and we get no choice at all. It is tolerable, but I am damn glad I don't have to pay for it as it is very overpriced. My tip would be to get a transfer vehicle of some kind to the Airways Hotel and eat there. (It is equally overpriced but the pool and the food are both much better.)

The Holiday Inn is next to a construction suite, and there is very little to do on the grounds for the kids, and the whole thing had the sense of being in prison, but I guess that is the fault of POM rather than the hotel.

As in other PNG hotels I have found that if you want connecting rooms you really have to explain this in considerable detail otherwise you will get rooms on two different floors, and when you say you wanted connecting rooms, they nod and smile as though you already have them. The actual apartments are always booked out.

On arrival the foyer is quite cavernous with a lot of people wandering around. But check in was friendly and efficient. The inital impression of the room was good until you looked into the bathroom which was tired and mouldy. The pool bar while inviting from a distance was alive with flies and including myself everybody was covering their glasses.
I kept on bumping into repair men in the lift so a lot of things seemed to be requiring maintenance. Bins beside the lift on my floor were overflowing and not emptied while I was there.
I had three meals at the Hotel and while at first I thought the restaurant was pretty ordinary the food was excellent on all occassions.
WIFI is only practicable in the business lounge - Cards are available but the cheapest on offer was K150.
The price is in line with what you expect in Pt Moresby as many resource companies competing for rooms have forced up prices dramatically.

The overall feel of the hotel is that its tired. The rooms need a makeover. We requested a room with two beds, but when we arrived it only had one, so we had to wait for 2-3 hous before they could setup another bed. The pool area isnt too shabby, with an adequate pool and bar. Sadly the WIFI is useless, and I could only get reception if i sat outside my room.

OK and safe, but completely overpriced. Not sure what it is about Port Moresby but things are hugely expensive. I heard from locals it was because of the significant ex-pat (Australian) community and the dragging up effect they have on prices.

So for $400 per night what do you get?
1. Safe hotel with guards and gate
2. Clean small room with AC (a loud one)
3. Adequate food (nothing special, in fact pretty average to be honest)
4. Small pool (the size of a large backyard pool in Australia
5. Tennis court and gym a short walk through the gardens
6. Breakfast in room- never arrived (but I wasnt charged for it so thats good I guess!!!)
7. Room not serviced 1 day
8. Wake up call was about 15mins late (didn't matter actually, but could have if I was in a hurry)
9. Good strong shower but sad, old bathroom.
10. Internet regularly faulty (and slow anyway) and yes YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA TO HAVE INTERNET ACCESS- AAARRRRGGGHHH, when will these hotels learn????
11. Free transfer to airport- not bad.

This place is about a 3 star standard but at 5 star prices. It appears the rest of Port Moresby is the same though so little choice here.

Where to go to eat? The Yacht club was OK (but you need to find a member), and there are nice places in the large shopping centres and big hotels (the best was probably Airport Hotel which overlooks the airport and an old DC3).

Several locals told me that the security issue is real:
DONT WALK OUTSIDE THE HOTEL ALONE: its dangerous. I have heard stories of people being robbed, stabbed, raped, killed. Walk with locals or drive in locked cars.

PS: the hotel is building +++ currently, so in a year or so, the new wings may be better.
