A Big hotel

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Oct 2019
This was a hotel where we use to g only for Lunch. The Hotel offers strong wi fi. The reception offers an inhouse shop. Very close to Haram. During Hajj period the hotel falls short as the crowd grows. Still, management is good.

Very busy hotel, next to le meridian. Lift service was terrible during hajj season. Lobby is good. Rooms are very congested. Only plus point is its walking distance from haram just 5 min walk. Staff is ok.

I have stayed in the hotel during Hajj. It is a good one. Staff are friendly. It is about 7 minutes walk from el Haram. Its problem is that the entrance of the hotel in not clean. Rubbish and bad smell all the time.
The food is moderate. This hotel can be rated 4 stars. Accepted.

If you can avoid this hotel, then avoid. We were there during Hajj season and for us, it put a real dampener on our trip. The hotel room is small and crams in 4 beds so not enough room to pray but that's fine as you would more than likely pray in the mosque. My wife's room had a blocked toilet and was out of use for over a day so started to smell really bad. The windows have never been cleaned - but ok you're not going for the view of the hotel. The shower cubicle is small but ALWAYS leaks all over the bathroom floor. My wife's room was the same. The staff are rude and unhelpful. The food variety is largely catered for people of Middle Eastern background but to a very poor standard - very watery, bland, warm (bordering on cold). I understand the hotel may not want to waste food but reheating 3 day old food to a mildly warm temperature is how people can get ill. They re-serve the same cakes, bread, cheese, etc. every day until it does get consumed, by which point they are hard and disgusting. The variety is poor and doesn't cater for people from Europe/US or even South Asia. The restaurant is spread over 3 floors, and one room can get full quickly, but the staff do not let you take food from one floor to the next and ask you to stand around until a space is available. The cutlery is unclean. The restaurant was leaking when we first arrived, and they tended to that, but we noticed it was leaking elsewhere in the restaurant a few days before we left. After a few days we stopped eating here as it wasn't nice or safe. The staff at the reception and front desk are always on their phones when talking to you - poor customer service and are unhelpful. We asked for box to be stored there for an hour tops, but were told to take it to our rooms in a horrible tone. In a 5 star hotel, they would be more accommodating to store it in their luggage room but they didn't want to know. Lifts are very slow so sometimes you are waiting 10-15 minutes for a lift. The only plus point was that it is close to the masjid - it's only a 3-4 min walk. WiFi doesn't work in the rooms, only works downstairs in the lobby but even then it's not good quality, especially if you want to use it to call home. Not a great hotel, 2 star at best.

Room tip: Don't eat here and stay as low as possible, waiting for lifts can be long.

Whilst I appreciate the busy Hajj season brings demands to hotel staff and service, there was added rudeness that was unwarranted during our stay.

The only decent aspect of the hotel was one housekeeping staff member who ensured we were replenished with clean towels, bedding and toilet roll.

We had to request a room change as the bathroom was emitting a sewage smell. The next room also had the same smell but it was less apparent and we were tired of complaining.

The rooms were tiny (cramming 3 beds into what looked like a single room) leaving no space for one to pray, and the bathrooms badly designed so that the wash basin, toilet and shower are compacted leaving little room.

As for the food at breakfast and evening - awful and recycled from one day to the next eg: noodles that weren't consumed the day before ended up in the rice the next day. There was no yoghurt or decent fruit one could at least survive on. Everything contained sugar. The pastries and bread had been kept out so long they were bordering solid and the cakes looked like they contained E numbers (!) and were too sweet. If you didn't have diabetes before, you may well have after staying at this hotel! We survived on cereal which we noticed was of a decent brand variety.

Be warned that there is no Wi-Fi in your rooms. You have to hang out in the lobby to get Wi-Fi. People started putting their chairs outside their room doors so they could sit and use the internet and make calls through Skype/WhatsApp etc.

I'd give it a 2 star rating from a western perspective, and even that's being generous!
