Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

Even when the main section is closed wandering around the square at all hours of the day and night soaking in its magical presence is a treat. Be sure to stand behind the coloured fountains at night to get a great shot of the beyond majestic site.

The main mosque is closed for renovation so visitors are restricted to the outside court yard. The good think is that the mosque is open for prayers (partially open). Wow the mosque is spectacular I would recommend a visit make time for this place. If you are non-Muslim you will only see the court yard

The Blue Mosque is undergoing some renovations, but the outer courtyard is still open to visitors. It is a good place for photography and placards of information explaining the history of the mosque and the Muslin faith. I highly recommend visiting Blue Mosque!

Just the majesty of the outside was stunning . The white stone, the large domes and its quiet imposition of the area. Shame it was closed when we were there. A reason to return...soon

This is perhaps the must-see attraction in Istanbul. If you do nothing else, make sure you visit this important mosque, monument and example of 17th century Islamic architecture. The gardens within the walls of the complex are lovely and there are plenty of trees, affording you shade during the hottest part of the day. There is also a large pedestrianised plaza outside which is fantastic for a stroll, without worrying about the traffic. We visited on a late afternoon in the spring, and it was the perfect temperature. There are lots of steps up to the main entrance, but the overall complex is fairly flat, for those with mobility problems. There are cafes and street food vendors around the complex if you get hungry or need a caffeine fix - the turkish coffee and baklava is awesome.
