Ban Lao Pako

This place was amazing! The bungalows were the perfect size for two people, each with a big front porch and hammock. The bathrooms are just a sink, a toliet, and a showerhead all together, but work great. Not much hot water though.
The food was very good and had a really great variety of food, even some western choices. The people were unbelievably accommodating and friendly. We couldn't have asked for better service.
The power is only one for an hour an half around dinner time, but after that you don't really need it. We sat be the fire each night, had beers, and chatted with the others staying there.
We were also able to bring our dog, which was very nice.
Quite the amazing experience. I will definitely go back when I am in Laos again!

We went to Ban Pako to escape from Vientiane for a couple of days and I really wish we hadn't. We booked a bungalow over the internet and transport from Vientiane. Journey OK, and setting of Ban Pako stunning - overlooking the Nam Khan river. However, the bungalow was small, with absolutely no facilities......... the bathroom was off the bedroom down 3 tiled/slippery steps. Within an hour of arriving our bathroom was overrun by ants. I timidly asked reception [because they bill themselves as an ecolodge] to deal with them and they came and sprayed the ants - however, no attempt was made to clean the bathroom - I had to clean up using water thrown over the floor and around the toilet. We were told we should eat dinner from a pretty uninspiring menu in the restaurant before 7.30. Dinner over we went and sat on our balcony to read!! At 8.30 the lights went out and we sat in the pitch darkness until another guest brought over an oil lamp and we were then able to recover our torch which was packed in one of our bags. This is a serious hazard, as to attempt the stairs in the dark is absolutely no fun. So, went to bed early. At breakfast I mentioned this scenario to one of the owners only to be berated that the lodge runs on photovoltaic cells and if there is not enough sunlight the lights go off and that we should have been told this at reception when we checked in!! So fully armed with torches and only cold showers we approached Day 2 - the only service I asked for was a massage and was told someone would have to come from the village - when I asked about this 1 hour later I was told that the staff couldn't phone out and therefore no masseur was available. Day 3 saw us make our escape as quickly as possible. It may bill itself as an ecolodge but it needs to be clear about its clientele - too expensive for most backpackers and with no facilities for people who are prepared to pay a bit more - cold showers, no electricity and stairs on which you could break your neck were not my idea of fun in the sun!
