While in most other cities during my travels, I didn't have a problem at all to identify a kind of place I liked and that fitted my traveler's budget, I had my problems in Phnom Penh. Eventually, after a night's stay in a cheaper guest house (unbearable heat and terrible mattress), I ended up at Smiley's Hotel and I'm pretty happy about my stay here. It's a rather modern building (elevator) rather outside the riverside center, about 3-4 km or 1-1.5 $ by tuk tuk. Still there are lots of restaurants nearby and several other guest houses and hotels around, so you won't feel lonely. The room is spacious and there is a lot of light thanks to the large window and a small little balcony. The bed is pretty decent, but not great, aircon works wonder in the heat of Phnom Penh and bathroom is basic but alright. Only problem I had was that the Internet connection was slow. Although they have a router on each floor, loading any kind of video or music stream was close to impossible. Room was cleaned properly and fridge staffed with new water during the day.
All in all very recommendable. 5 stars, if the Internet was faster. But great value for money (15$).More
