“Good location, adequate accommodation.”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

We spent 3 nights at the Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) after a ten day boat trip down the Vietnam Coast from the north. The location of the Hotel is very good as it is a relatively easy to walk to some of the more historically interesting sights. With the advent of 'tourist police' to regulate the traffic, crossing the road is also less dangerous. The pool area is small but it is a pleasant area to have a relaxed lunch. There are some quaint little eateries close by as well. We caught a taxi to the Airport without hassle also.

stayed for 2 nights before we started a 12 day APT tour and loved it, we also stayed at sheridon next door for 2 night but prefer the caravelle. Location is perfect for site seeing can walk most places then back to hotel for a late lunch around the pool which is lovely -they do a great cheese platter for about $18 ! make sure you go for a drink on the 9th floor a meal at elbow room to finish off the day - about 5 mins by taxi. Oh and the bed and pillows were the highlight!

The hotel is beautiful and well appointed and the service from your concierge and upon check in was lovely. The room was large, bright, clean and very comfortable with thoughtful finishing touches. Good location for high end tourism stores, restaurants, etc...

I want to point out 2 unfortunate incidents in our short stay of one night.

1) This reservation was booked and confirmed on 10/1/11. 5 months before our arrival date. The promotional rate meant we paid on 10/1/11 in full and there were "no amendments" as stated on your confirmation email as well as your website. When we checked in we were presented with the paperwork stating our rate was 150 USD and it was paid in full. When we checked out, we were asked to pay a charge because the exchange rate had changed. Your hotel has had our money for 5 months and it is clearly stating no amendments, no refunds, no exchanges, etc... and if we did not show, or if the rate had changed to favor the US dollar, I am certain there would have been no refunds to us. This practice is not only distasteful but I am certain it is not legal. Clean up your act, you are too classy a hotel to be this disrespectful to your customers. We did refuse to pay but did not have time to talk with a manager, only the overnight clerk.

2) Your front door man graciously got us a cab to the airport upon our check out. 2 minutes into our cab ride, the cab driver almost hit two police officers on a scooter. This was at 3:30am when the roads were empty. The cab driver was pulled over and we of course had an international flight to catch. We waited patiently in the cab for 15 minutes and then got out to ask the cab driver who was talking with the police to get us another cab. We ended up flagging our own cab and when we asked the driver to open the trunk so we could switch cabs and get to the airport he wanted us to pay him for his 4 block drive and 15 minute wait. The meter was running the entire time we sat in the cab while he was talking to the police. We refused and fortunately we were at the airport in time. What I would like to point out however, is that on our initial stay in HCMC 3 weeks prior, we stayed at a small and simple and $18/night hotel (with a lovely breakfast included). There we were told only to use Vinisun cabs as they were reliable and fair and did not engage in unfair charges, etc... We did for our entire stay in HCMC and we never had a problem. Your doorman got the first cab driver he saw and was not selective. The cab he put us in clearly was unfair and unthoughtful. I suggest you take the advice on the host of the first part of stay in HCMC and use only those cab companies that provide fair service.

Mostly because of #1, I do not be recommend this hotel.

Thank you.

LBorthwick, Manager at Caravelle Saigon, responded to this review, 16 March 2012
Dear SharonBoston,

Thanks for your feedback regarding the hotel.

After reviewing the incident with your billing I must apologize. In these cases when a guest prepays accommodation the hotel policy is to absorb any losses in relation to exchange rate changes. In this case our employee was in error and has been retrained. The entire staff have also being briefed once more to prevent such an incident re-occurring.

The Taxi service employed by the hotel is a reputable company namely Saigon Tourist. Occasionally even the best companies (including VinaSun which you have mentioned) have some errant drivers. Your feedback has been passed on to Saigon Tourist Transportation so they may improve their service to the Caravelle and our guests.

Kind Regards,
Linton Borthwick

Our 3 nights here were very enjoyable. We had the lowest priced room,in the new tower, but it was still extremely comfortable. Being on the 21st floor it had superb view over the Saigon river and to the countryside beyond ( our room was at the back of the hotel) It was also very quiet, no road noise at all. The room was a bit blandly decorated, but the beds were very comfortable with lovely linens, the bathroom had a full bath and shower, and having a tea/coffee tray and complementary water was good. The a/c was quiet and efficient, and there was plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space. Wifi was free.
The breakfast was served in the restaurant 19, and was of good standard, with a huge choice of both Western and Eastern food. It had rather a canteen feel to it, with echoes from the ceramic floor. One morning it was full, and we were directed to the club restaurant in the old building- much more refined and comfortable.
All the staff we encountered spoke good English, and were efficient, smiling and helpful.
Situated aross the road from the Opera house the hotel is within walking distance of all the major tourist attractions of HCMC- we felt it perfect for tourists, and would recommend highly
