Stayed two nights at the Continental with at the end of a GAdventure tour. From the reviews it looks like you either like historic hotels or you do not. In our case, I was delighted that this hotel was on the tour, having remembered it from the war, and once we arrived and settled in we were not disappointed. The hotel is now operated by a government tourist agency, and no doubt has gone through numerous renovations since its construction in the 1880s. The rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and large windows from pre-AC days. The beds were comfortable, there was a writing desk, a small table with water and fruit on it and two chairs by the window, plus a large wardrobe. The only thing that I would say was dated was the bathroom, but we are talking 1980, not 1880, and everything was clean and in working order. Most unique feature of the room was a letter slot in the door with a brass drop attached on the inside, a holdover from the days when people like Graham Greene lived at the hotel. Fortunately today the hotel has free WiFi. This hotel certainly isn’t the Hyatt down the street. Yet for its age the Continental is in very good shape, possessing a certain charm, in part because it’s smaller than the newer hotels giving it a more intimate feel.

The Continental’s location is excellent and within walking distance of many points of interest. Being on a small square across from the Opera, and away from the main street, also means it is relatively quiet.

Breakfast is served buffet-style in the main dining room, with additional seating under the arcade or on the patio. Excellent choice of dishes is provided, as well as eggs cooked to order. Took a minute or two to find the napkins; they are on the table in what appears to be a small cigar box, another feature that makes this hotel memorable.

Dear Oxford1809,

It's so nice reading your long review about our hotel, especially how you found paper napkin in cigar box. Yes, the napkin box looks like a cigar box, many guests bought it as a souvenir, and some of them insisted that they would like to buy the box the breakfast table, not a new one in our souvenir shop. G-adventure is one of our good partner, we've hosted many G-adventure groups so far. Hope next time when you come back to Ho Chi Minh City, our hotel will be in your accommodation list and you'll find more interesting things about hotel.

Best regards,

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel. Our room was amazing and looked out over the opera house. This was billed as a 4 star and definitely lived up to this - the room was more like a suite with a good balcony we could both sit out on with a separate dining area, dressing gowns, slippers, fruit, water and tea/coffee provided. The hotel is situated in a quieter part of District 1 but only around 10 minutes walk from all the hussle and bussle. In fact, we were able to walk to all the attractions from here. Breakfast was served in quite a grand dining room with an outside courtyard in case you value sunshine over style! There was a good choice of food every day for breakfast and this varied each day, with different food geared to different tastes. We found there was plenty that geared to English tastes and there was enough to satisfy a vegan too. The staff were very helpful and very eager to please and we did not find this to be about tipping which is quite refreshing. All in all, I would definitely stay at the Continental again and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Saigon.

We spend 4 days/3 nights in Saigon at the end of a 2.5 week trip down through Vietnam. This hotel was a charming place to stay in our last few days. The location is fantastic, an easy walk from the markets, shopping centres, with plenty of good local restaurants and street vendors close by. Rooms are spacious and clean. We were in a room located on the first floor above the facilities room, so we did hear a little background noise from AC units, but due to the age of the hotel and their AC system, I woud think there would be noise from this in most areas (certianly the internal courtyard area did have the constant noise from this or other machinery being operated). Staff were excellent, on every contact point with customers. The restaurants were well presented and the range for breakfast was amazing!

Unfortunately we only spent 2 nights here - I would love to have spent more time. The rooms were wonderful and atmospheric, with lots of old dark wood and fabulous details such as letterboxes into the rooms. Of course there are the historic connections of this lovely old hotel. The only real minus for me was the fact there was no real bar, and what there was closed down at 10 - in fact the whole place was pretty closed up by that time.

Room tip: Opera view room was lovely

Dear Martinmjgh,

2 nights was really short time, but please don't worry, you'll have more chance to come back and our pleasure to welcome you. There are some bar nearby close later but going to bead at 10:00 is good for health isn't it. We also think about open our bar longer and your review is an encourage for us.

Thanks for your review and thanks for giving us a chance to serve you.
