I think this hotel is very convenient for travelers first arriving in Saigon since everything can be arranged online, including the taxi. And an airport taxi pickup is a very good idea, as the hotel would be difficult to find on your own. Really good location for travelers, it's just a little hidden in an alley.

Our room was spacious and immaculately clean. Breakfast was nice.

However, we stayed at another Saigon guesthouse later on when Cat Huy was booked out, and found that to be much better value. It's actually quite easy to find nice hotels for about $20 USD or less just walking around District 1. Also, other hotels typically charge $8 for airport transfers; this one charged $15.

One thing that annoyed me was that, at checkout, the receptionist tried to bill us for an extra night. When I pointed out this error, she played stupid and then laughed and said sorry. We found later on that many Vietnamese hotels/restaurants/taxis (ESPECIALLY taxis) will intentionally miscalculate the bill or give incorrect change to foreigners. Too bad this hotel is not above that.

I'm a little late submitting this review. We stayed at Cat Huy for a 4 nights mid-January, but have only just returned home after 6 weeks of SE Asian Travel. Yet again, thank you Tripadvisor and all who submit reviews in helping us choose our accommodations, all of which were fabulous and great value for money.

We had booked Cat Huy's driver to bring us from the airport - thank goodness we did, because once you exit the doors, it's total chaos - took us 15 minutes just to find him! Then, as others had said, the alley isn't easy to find. I have to admit to a moment's panic when we were pulling our suitcases through the market - some not so pleasant old veggie smells; but, all misgivings disappeared as soon as we entered this lovely, little hotel, were greeted by warm, friendly staff and saw our beautiful, spotlessly clean, modern room, complete with tiny balcony overlooking the market. Remarkably, it was really quiet in the room.

We were just one floor up from the reception area, which, on reflection, was a good thing, because there's no elevator and we had a couple of heavyish suitcases. All the extra touches, like everyone said, were there, which made Cat Huy exceptional value for money, considering the breakfast was included - all this for $32 per night!!

Our "valuables" were stored in the safe behind reception, so no worries. Breakfast was simple but very good - Vietnam and Laos have the best baguettes outside of France and Quebec!! Vietnamese coffee was sensational. All the staff were delightful, but special mention goes to sweet, little Gabby, who was remarkable. (Gabby, if you read this, I hope your lovely Australian returned at the end of Feb!)

We were in HCM during the New Year and the staff were very helpful in advising us of the best places to be to enjoy the festivities and see the fireworks.

Just one block away, on the main street, is a little Pho cafe,(Pho Qui Inh, c/o Pham Ngu Lao/Do Quang Dau) which has the most amazing Pho; we ate there 3 times and paid about $2.50 each. To walk to "downtown" was approx 10 mins, braving the thousands of never-ending, never-stopping motor scooters.

Only one, teensy-weensy quibble - they could really use better towels - they are very small and very thin; but, no problem at all when I requested extras. Certainly not a deal breaker!

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Ho Chi Minh City and hope that we have the chance to return one day.

Room Tip: No Elevator, so, if stairs a problem, select a room on lower level. Would recommend a room with a window overlooking the market

Visited Vietnam with my two boys, and this hotel was referred to us by a friend. Outstanding service, spotlessly clean hotel, great breakfasts, and wonderful location. We were very, very happy to be received here both times we were in Ho Chi Minh City. A real blessing to stay here.

Gaby, Anh, and the other staff and owner are wonderful - thank you!!

stayed March 2012. Cat Huy is a lovely hotel, which is located down a alley way. The alleyway is a market in the morning and is a fantasic cutural expierence to see the locals selling thier fresh produce. We had a transfer from the airport, in a run down car with a non english speaking driver..which lets say was a shock to the system stepping off the plane. But my hubby and i just laughed and shrugged it off. All the staff are warm, welcoming and allways smiling and allways willing to help you. We had room 602 which was a fair hike up the steps..so if you want to keep fit, stay here :-) If you have knee problems ask for a lower level. Breakfast had 4 choices, small variety but we arent fussy people..it was good to have something in your belly to start your day. Remember to take your shoes off at the door step. Rooms are allways clean, shower is big, small balcony, lots of tv channel choices, fresh tea is a nice added lil extra in the room. Great stay, great location for a great price.

Wr stayed here twice in late February and were very happy both times. Chose Cat Huy because of good reviews, location and price, and would highly recommend. We arrived by bus from Phnom Penh and it was less than 10 minutes on foot from bus drop off point to the hotel. The hotel is down an alley away from the main tourist road, which is great because you are near everything except the street noise. The reception desk is up one flight of stairs, our room, 302, was up one more flight. You have to take your shoes off before you go up to the reception and the rooms above, but that's in part how they manage to keep everything so clean.

The reception staff is very helpful, always smiling and has a good command of English. The owner (I think) speaks less English, but he is also smiling and friendly all the time. The other people we came across (cleaning staff and breakfast staff) always said hello with a friendly smile, but spoke very little English.

The rooms were a decent size with nice modern bathroom, flat screen TV, coffee/tea service and hair dryer. I think the hotel is less than 3 years old, and it is well maintained. Rooms have minibar fridge and two free bottled water (more for a modest price in the minibar if you need it).

We had laundry done both times, it's a decent price and is done in 24 hours. They advertise 20 000 Dong or about $1 per kilo, we paid about $8 to do two medium bags of laundry each time, which was probably a bit more than 1$ per kilo, but still a great price.

What surprised us the most was how quiet the rooms were. Some people have written about noise coming up from the street, but we experienced none. Our first morning there was a Sunday and it was so quiet we figured there must be no market on the alley below on Sundays. Much to our surprise we looked outside and down a bit and it was in full swing. With the AC unit running (fairly quiet but sort of a nice white noise maker) the room was basically soundproof, or just about. Speaking of AC, ours was leaking a bit on that first morning, so I advised them and they took care of it right away.

We also booked a tour of the Cu Chi tunnels and Cao Dai Holy See through them, very convenient and no extra charge as far as I could tell.

The only things you might have to be aware of before booking here are:

1. Cash only, no credit, but you can pay in Dong or US $;

2. No elevator- the second time we stayed we were one floor higher than the first time, and that's about as high as I would want to go as the hallways are not air conditioned and I'm middle aged!

3. There is no safe in the room, but apparently they will hold things for you in their safe.

Between stays we went away on a 3 day tour and they held our extra luggage for us at no charge. Our last day there our train did not leave until 7 PM so were able to pay for half a day and stay in the room until we left for the train station. Don't discount doing this, the rates are cheap so half a day charge is a steal to be able to find refuge in the AC in the hot afternoon and shower again before
heading to the train.

Breakfast was included, choice of omelette, "opla" (two sunny side up eggs) or Vietnamese breakfast options. Eggs come with a huge baguette and some butter, but no jam. You also get choice of drink and a banana. Not a huge variety, but freshly made and decent.

Overall, a great stay for a great price.
