Good location, big rooms, nothing more

Review of Army Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Oct 2019
We stayed here twice (in two different rooms). In one room there was this black spot behind the door, a result of some burning, so we had to let the staff know.
The second time we stayed here, the toilet was broken. We waited a long while for help, they sent one maid with no clue in English or in plumbing. Then they sent for another one with the same abilities. After two hours, late at night (around 01:00) and after a long hard day, they decided to let us stay in a different room.
The swimming pool was not used by anybody, and it seems that they didn't even have a lifeguard there.
The food (breakfast) was just OK, the highlight was an omelet (had some queue) , the Pho soup was OK. They are still not familiar with western costumes - I asked to add soy milk to my coffee and they were trying to tell me that I'm wrong and I should use cows milk...
The rooms are soundproofed for outside noise but noise from people in the hallway and slamming doors can be heard.
The hotel is within a walking distance to the lake and the markets near it, and there's a fine restaurant not far from it (Vuon Pho Cafe & Restaurant ).

We visited the place on October 2019. We were suggested to take this hotel by Vietnam authority. Google says its a four star hotel. I would rather rate it as a 3 star. Reasons are mentioned below:

1. Unfriendly staffs, even it's difficult to converse in English.
2. Very average gym and swimming pool. Even the swimming pool water tasted awful.
3. Without our instruction, the hotel staffs daily made up our rooms...I don't know why... !!
4. Towels provided were two small to cover one after shower.
5. Pretty much expensive.
6. We were sharing a twin room . Out of two room access cards, my room mate lost one of the card. They were about to charge us additional 10 USD for this crappy card !!

Good Side:
1. Food is good.
2. City centre is nearby.
3. Breakfast menu is diverse and tasty.

This was the last hotel I stayed at, during a 10 day trip to Vietnam. a very empty and cold environment.

No one smiles here. The A/C was dodgy and my friend became ill on the last night on this trip. The food wasn't great at breakfast, best to avoid breakfast. You can't go outside for breakfast, The doors to the outside area were always guarded by 3 hotel staff.
The room was clean, but once we went to breakfast, hotel cleaning staff were immediately in the room.
The reception desk was not helpful. I asked room service for some tea and milk. I then got a call from reception saying the room maid would come to the room from restaurant to deliver this. She never appeared. So I had to go out and buy some. On my way, I did notice the guy at reception looking up social media on his phone.
Checking out was interesting, with receptionist asleep with his head on his hands. Took a while to wake him up. Didn't have a good bye or "hope you enjoyed your stay" remark as we were leaving. I don't think hotel staff in heels is practical either.
The pool was nice. This is the only nice thing.

The hotel is very well located near the old town.
Rooms are large with all necessary equipment. Bathroom is nice but needs some renovation to avoid such bad surprises.
Breakfast is oriented to Asian clients with a few choice for the others.
Unfortunately at the reception, lobby or restaurant nobody smiles or says good morning.
I think this hotel has potential and needs some strength.

Room is okay. My friend and myself both got food poisoning from the breakfast. Booked and paid for a car through the hotel for a airport transfer 24 hours in advance of the time I needed it. They didn’t bother booking it from their end and now I will be late for my flight
