Empty Hotel

Review of Army Hotel
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Oct 2019
This was the last hotel I stayed at, during a 10 day trip to Vietnam. a very empty and cold environment.

No one smiles here. The A/C was dodgy and my friend became ill on the last night on this trip. The food wasn't great at breakfast, best to avoid breakfast. You can't go outside for breakfast, The doors to the outside area were always guarded by 3 hotel staff.
The room was clean, but once we went to breakfast, hotel cleaning staff were immediately in the room.
The reception desk was not helpful. I asked room service for some tea and milk. I then got a call from reception saying the room maid would come to the room from restaurant to deliver this. She never appeared. So I had to go out and buy some. On my way, I did notice the guy at reception looking up social media on his phone.
Checking out was interesting, with receptionist asleep with his head on his hands. Took a while to wake him up. Didn't have a good bye or "hope you enjoyed your stay" remark as we were leaving. I don't think hotel staff in heels is practical either.
The pool was nice. This is the only nice thing.

The hotel is very well located near the old town.
Rooms are large with all necessary equipment. Bathroom is nice but needs some renovation to avoid such bad surprises.
Breakfast is oriented to Asian clients with a few choice for the others.
Unfortunately at the reception, lobby or restaurant nobody smiles or says good morning.
I think this hotel has potential and needs some strength.

Room is okay. My friend and myself both got food poisoning from the breakfast. Booked and paid for a car through the hotel for a airport transfer 24 hours in advance of the time I needed it. They didn’t bother booking it from their end and now I will be late for my flight

Whilst the accomodation and cleanliness of this hotel was good we were outraged at the bar service. We asked for Gin and tonic and we're told that they had no tonic. We then ordered Singapore Slings (which were on the cocktail menu) but were served a revolting, bitter mixture that seems to be predominantly soda water, lime juice and something that made it look pink - no contra, no benedictine, no fruit juice etc etc.... When we complained that this was not a Singapore Sling, the barmaid pretended not to speak English and refused to refund the cost of the drink.
We then spoke to the concierge who backed up the barmaid, said that is was their own version of a Singapore Sling, and also refused to refund, or to offer us another beverage that was drinkable. We then asked to speak to the manager of the hotel, but were told he was unavailable. After a good deal of argument and verbal abuse and great stress for our wonderful guide, the concierge finally refunded us the money from his own pocket.
We were later led to understand that some of the staff were untrained "army brats" who thought , because of their parents position, they could get away with treating people with a total lack of courtesy and respect. Never again!!!

We stayed at Army Hotel for 15 days. There are many positive things and some to improve.
The staff is adorable, kind and professional. The room and bathroom large, but the cleaning not so good, the carpet is dusty and I never saw a vacuum cleaner.
Breakfast is pretty good, we appreciated very much fresh fruits.
Hall and bar are spacious and good for rest your ears after a day in Hanoi!
Restaurant is not good, but staff is lovely too.
Location is good, close to Citadel and many beautiful open market.
