Affordable hotel and the whole Vietnam trip well organised

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Apr 2014
The hotel is well situated next to the famous lake where we enjoyed the ambiance. Everything is readily accessible. The restaurants nearby are wonderful treats. Good breakfast, warm service, the staff is very helpful and the price is affordable. Thomas Nguyen has also organized a beautiful trip for us covering the whole country from north to south (Mai Chau, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc). The whole programe is well thought out and we really enjoyed our vacation. Thank you very much Thomas.

I booked this hotel through Hotels.com in Sept 2013 and then arranged directly with the hotel via email for airport pickup plus notified them our train tickets would be delivered to reception. On arrival I was pleased to find the tickets waiting for us and the room as pictured on the website. However I was extremely disappointed to find that so many facilities listed when I booked did not in fact exist. Most have since been deleted from booking sites so I won't comment further on them. I will note that our accommodation did not have a "separate bedroom"; the "separate sitting room" was just one lounge chair jammed between the bed and the window; and the "separate shower" was actually a shower over the bath. Moreover we did not get the advertised bathrobes, balcony nor cooking facilities and the "free items from the minibar" were one teabag and one coffee sachet on arrival plus a couple more during the week. The overwhelming problem with our room, however, was the bad smell emanating from the leaky bathroom which hit us as soon as we unlocked our door and caused our clothes to smell. Our room was serviced only a couple of times in the entire week and, despite Lynda and Snow at reception being lovely helpful girls, they could not provide the "Please Make Up My Room" card they promised. The floor was filthy the entire time. There were also piles of hotel laundry (dirty and clean) constantly stored on the landing outside our room. The buffet breakfast was varied and very good as was the location with just a 5-10 minute walk to the lake. I notice they claim the old hotel was renovated in 2011. Our bathroom certainly did not get a total makeover at that time and needed attention. Beware that the current changing of the hotel name from New Star to Crystal does not justify it being a "BRAND NEW HOTEL" as they are now advertising. From my experience I cannot trust this hotel and therefore cannot recommend it despite the front of house staff being so lovely.

The staff here are wonderful...the service is great..but the stench of damp in the elevator is revolting...please sort this out quickly!...you are too good a place to allow this unfortunate smell!

They helped us plan tours and were very friendly.

We spent 4 nights over the lunar new year, beginning from new year's eve. The receptionist said he was sorry that there was no one to clean up because it was new year, but promised the room would be cleaned the next day. No, the room had never been cleaned for the entire time we stayed there, and no clean towels (we needed clean ones because of the humidity) were delivered. We had to go down to ask for them every night.

We booked the room at New Star Hotel by coincidence based on the great location in the old city and the good price. When arriving jetlagged we were warmly greeted by all the staff and were happy about the family room we received. We are travelling with our two children (11 and 13 years old) and they too were happy with both the room as well as the walking distance to the lake and the markets.

Normally, we like to plan our trips ourselves, but after consulting the Hotel manager, Mr Thomas Nguyen, we accepted his assistance in organising our Vietnam vacation. A choice we are very happy with! We planned the trip together with Thomas and he advised us - based on our requests - where to go and where to stay to get the most out of our trip. We visited Sapa, Halong Bay, Huê, Hoi An and will continue to the South. In between the different parts of the trip - we were allowed to use the hotel in Hanoi as our base to be able to freshen up and they kept our luggage for no charge.

The trip was completely adapted to our wishes and we got to borrow a mobile phone from the hotel in order to be able to stay in contact if we wished to change anything (stay longer, stay less in one place). When taking the train we were escorted by staff to the correct train. We were also picked up upon arrival by private drivers.

Mr Nguyen, Mr Wall - the sales manager and their staff are doing a great job. We can strongly recommend this hotel both to business and leisure travellers. We will for sure return to Hanoi and the New Start Hotel. All-in-all - a VIP treatment and great value for money!

The hotel has a good location in the centre of Hanoi, and we appreciated the personal service regarding organizing tours for us. We were taken care of from the first to the last day. We can recommend the hotel and we also liked the buffet breakfast.

Room tip: When making a booking, please inform about your plans, so you can get your tours organized.
