Verdict:
- I will not stay here again

I was taking a night train from Hanoi to Sapa, and needed somewhere to take a shower and rest for 4-5 hours before the train journey. Mango Hotel is situated next to the train station.

Room Type: 2 single beds
Paid: US$15.00 (negotiated with hotel staff; intended stay for 4-5 hours)

The outside and reception area of the hotel looks modern and new. The hotel rooms are NOT! All the furniture in the hotel room dates back to at least 1970-80s. The bed was slightly softer than hardwood. I am sure I wouldn't be able to sleep well if I had to sleep overnight at Mango Hotel.

The room was generally clean though.

The shower room is small and has no shower screen. After a shower, the shower room is all wet.

The reception staff was OK, not overly service-oriented or friendly.

This hotel is state-owned.

We chose this hotel because it was close to the train station, however, we found another hotel after one night. It is very noisy and the matress was extremely hard. When you get away from the reception it is not. very clean and the staff was inpolite.
Generelly it was a very bad experience, and we would not recommend this hotel.

The staff we experienced where very rude claiming we had stolen bottles of water from the room and ignored us having their own conversation. The beds had springs sticking up and the air conditioning was broken however we did not know upon check-in however the hotel sent someone to repair it when we where in the room which i thought was bizarre. Despite the hotel being cheap there was no lift and the uneven steps made it difficult to move cases up to your bedrooms. Don't be fooled by the reception area as it is very modern and the restaurant very clean. The hotel is in close to the train station which meant it was the obvious choice for us however I recommend you find a far nicer hotel than this one, which boasts two stars, but doesn't deserve them.

Arriving in Hanoi very early on the train, with a group of students on expedition in tow we decided to book into a room at the Mango.
Having 2 students not well we thought it best they stayed at the hotel and rested whilst the rest of the group spent some time in Hanoi.
So far we were happy enough with the Mango hotel.
30 minutes later i recieved a call from the 2 unwell students who were told they were not allowed in the room to rest as they had only booked the room to store bags (room paid for in full!) Eventually after speaking with a very rude member of staff the students were allowed to rest, that until they were told that the room was infact due to have an air conditioning unit fitted meaning whilst they slept and our bags were left in the room a number of workmen were allowed access to build.
We returned a few hours later ready to leave on yet another day of travelling to be once again spoken to like dirt by one member of staff inparticular (refused to give us her name) she then told us that due to people using the toilet in the room that infact we must now pay for 17 people and not the room as we had used the facilities. Wait it gets better!

By this point we had realised what a bad decision it was to stay here, we requested our passports be returned so we could continue our journey, we were then told that we had used the supposedly not free toothpaste, bottled water and soaps and requested to pay this before our passports would be returned, no wait theres more, we had used the fridge to chill our own water - no not free either using this facility incurs a charge.

I must add that the gentleman behind the reception was very helpfull and apologetic in regards his collegues attitude.

One last thing, i'd ask to see the rooms before you pay as the photos on this website dont look anything like the rooms we were shown.

All in all a foul mouthed women and increasing charges for ridiculous reasons made sure that 17 under 18 travellers will never forget this hotel! Rember never to return that is.
