Owner description: Colloquially known as "Hanoi Hilton," this famous prison has been mostly torn down. A museum occupies the remaining structure.

This is quite the place. There is only a small portion of the original prison left and it is surrounded by high rises but that does not detract from what this was. It is hard to believe that a culture supposedly as advanced as the French could treat people as inhumanely as they did "only" 50-60 years ago. It would appear that the Vietnamese treated their American prisoners significantly better 20 years later. All-in-all, a very emotional journey one takes through these remaining buildings.

An important piece of must-see history, including dramatic recreations of what it must have been like to be locked up in this horrible place the French built in 1896.

this was an emotional place to see. it is a shame that the back of the prision was demolished to build a high rise but the garden is very sereal even though the is a high rie hotel on the other side of the fence.

This was probably the most interesting thing I saw in Hanoi. Definitely worth the visit and better than the other attractions. More than anything I think it goes to explain the antagonism the populations has towards the west and people from other countries as a whole.

Worth a visit to get a feel for conditions in this prison under the French regime; especially the treatment given to women; some as young as 14. Not too heavy, more a place of contemplation.
