Stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour package in July 2012.
Rooms: the rooms are well appointed and clean, although a bit on the smaller side. Everything is controlled via a panel next to the bed which is quite convenient. The tv had a large selection of channels from all over the world. The room was well equipped and came with a mini fridge and safe. There is no wifi in the room, Internet access is only available via an Ethernet cord. The beds were comfortable and the washroom was clean. Maid service was provided daily.
Amenities: the hotel has wifi free of charge in the lobby. There is a fitness center and spa on site although I did not use these. The hotel will provide currency exchange to VND at normal rates. While we were there the hotel lobby was under renovation however they were proceeding in sections and this did not affect our experience at all.
Food: the hotel restaurant serves a breakfast buffet which was good and had a large selection to suit anyones taste. Minibar items were priced quite high when compared to outside stores. Also the prices for dinner from the restaurant were a bit higher than other nearby places, although not ridiculous. The room had free coffee and tea as well as 2 small bottles of water included.
Location: as we were part of a guided tour I didn't get much of a chance to explore the area. There were a few restaurants and small shops very nearby and our tour van only took 15 minutes or less to take us to most landmarks, so the location is, by deduction, fairly central.
Staff: The staff here were by far the highlight of our time here. Everyone was kind and helpful, they went above and beyond to help out. My friend required a prescription and the hotel sent a staff member to walk with us and translate. They also recommended restaurants and gave us ideas of what to do. Everyone from the bellboys to the manager was simply delightful. The staff at Sunway was phenomenal and for that reason alone I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat.
Overall: Aside from the higher prices at the minibar and hotel restaurant (which I have found to be common at nearly all hotels throughout the world) this hotel is great. The rooms are comfortable and clean, the breakfast is huge and delicious with many choices, and the staff was genuinely concerned with our enjoyment of our stay and incredibly kind. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Hanoi. The staff really made this hotel into a highlight of my time in Vietnam.
