Splendid hotel, right opposite the St. Joseph Cathedral.
Really neat rooms, with fast free wifi, wonderful restful beds, powerful A/C, smiling service, great breakfast included that powers you through the day, and with a full backpackers network of hostels and hotels two streets behind it leads to lively nightlife nearby or close by in the old quarter.

From the moment that we arrived and had a welcoming from the ever friendly receptionist with complimentary drinks we knew we were staying in a nice place. The staff can genuinely not do enough for you, there is ample selection for breakfast and staying in one of the family rooms, we had 2 large Kingsize beds and a fully functioning bathroom suite which was perfect for 2 sharing (not sure how you could fit a family in 2 kingsize beds mind). For the price it was the best value accommodation that we stayed in through our time in Vietnam. If you can ignore the early morning church bells which is quite endearing, I Couldn’t recommend this place enough.

Wow - what can we say. Being over 55 year old women travellers we needed more than backpackers accommodation. We originally booked one night in a sister hotel, which was very disappointing - so we went across the lane and looked at Splendid Star Suite's rooms and quickly shouted YES YES. And we were not disappointed. The room was very large, clean and functional. In house computer was an added bonus. Showers had pressure and plenty of hot and cold. The balcony was a treat and the beds the most comfortable we experienced during our 4 weeks travelling through Vietnam. And the price was excellent. I would not only recommend this hotel but will definitely stay there again. The staff bent over backwards to help us too. A big thanks to Hannah - a true problem solver.

Room Tip: If you can't handle the tolling of the bells from the Church across the road - opt for a room at the back. Personally I didn't mind the bells at all... though there is no rhyme or reason why they toll at odd hours.

I checked in this noon(06/19/2012), booked on the website of booking.com with the 120 3 nites for a so called honey moon suite, with a round bed inside the bed room.

1. There is a blackout at the moment, claimed to be the power cut of the whole block, but later i found it's not true. So i was not able to checkin until the power really recovered at around 4:00pm;

2. In the evening when I got back to the hotel the power's cut again, and I looked out of the window , for sure their are lights in the houses from the neighourhood.

3. The wall is kind of thin, it is raining now and i can hear the pitter patter loud and clear lying on the bed.

4. There is not even an dust bin in the living room, the only one is in the rest room...

Here comes something positive,

1. the service is really good, it is Hanna who checked in for me, she English is good and is really nice and willing to help if you have any kind of trouble being a foreigner here.

2. the price is comparatively good given in such a good location, we have a cathedral at our window within 39 meters and when the bell rings, we can hear that, dont know this should be a cons or pro?

That's all for now, will update if i have any new findings

Room Tip: No elevator, steps...my biggest opponent... there are 6 floors, travellers with big luggage's should be aware of this, the room is starting from 2nd floor.

I was impressed by the overall services provided during our stay in Hanoi. Great location and affordable price made it an absolutely great deal. At first, my friends and I were complaining about how badly the hotel needs an elevator, given its steep and narrow stairways. However, we kind of got used to it after a while until the time of check out when we needed to carry our suitcases down the stairs ourselves. Anyways, all i have to say is we love how we were treated: staffs always smiled and showed us warm welcome, general information given about the city was very very helpful.
If i got a chance to visit Hanoi for the second time, i would definitely stay here.

Room Tip: Fourth floor is the best
