Thumbs up to Manager Toon ,,Wat,
Being a non-cooking guy, my girl convinced me to go to a Thai cooking class, since I love Thai cuisine.
We went for half-day course, and chose 4 dishes to do and learn. We were taught by a cheerful and plump Thai lady, who explained the nature of all the ingredients, and the basic rules of Thai cooking.
Then over ca. 2 hours we made these 4 dishes under her watchful eye, while she was giving us advice all the time.
And then we ate it all - I was so full that I got to the edge of bursting.
And now I know how to make an amazing Massaman curry, greatly enjoyed by my all friends and family.
We had a fabulous time at Chang's. Our chef May was a great teacher!! We toured a food market where she explained all the ingredients and then we went to the school. We learned to cook 4 dishes and ate as we went through the courses. We met several other travelers and learned about Thai culture as we learned to cook. An absolute must do!
My mom and I were in Chiang Mai during Loi Krathong/Yi Peng in November and decided to book a cooking class. Since Chiang Mai is so busy during this holiday, some of the more popular cooking schools were booked up.
It turns out that was a good thing! We booked an afternoon cooking class at Chang and had an exceptional experience. We were picked up from our hotel and brought to the cooking school. We were served tea and, even better, had the opportunity to make our own krathongs prior to starting the class! This was a very nice extra and it was fun to learn the proper way to make them, even if we struggled a bit!
There was a group of five people there at the same time, but we were sort of separated and started a little before the others. We appreciated this. There are a good variety of dishes you can choose to make. Some of the elements come chopped up, but there is a good amount of work you have to do to prep. I thought they did a good job of striking the balance with that. We made spring rolls, curry, khao soi, and pad thai. The pace of the class was perfect and we had amazing food to enjoy at the end!
We choose the afternoon cooking class which was 2 hours long. We were in a group of 6 which was perfect as it wasn't too cramped. Their was one main instructor and two others helping to make sure everyone had some direction. We had 4 sections to choose one dish from - curry, stir fry, soup and salad.
The food was amazing and we look forward to making them again with the recipes book. Our favourite was the green curry :) would highly recommend.
The staff at Chang were amazing. We had a great time learning how to cook thai dishes. Many ingredients were pre-chopped for you and prepared on a tray, you simply had to assemble or mix. This could be a pro or a con, depending on your preferences and expectations from a cooking course. The instructor spoke very good english and was clear in her directions. All the dishes turned out fantastic! They gave a recipe book at the end, but I found that not all the recipes we made were in it... All in all, a nice way to spend the afternoon.
