“Oasis of calm in hectic chiang mai”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

We did a big trip this year, Thailand! We booked this hotel via trailfinders and if you are doing a tour of the north it is well worth while booking their 5day/4night tour with private guide. It is not expensive for what is included. And the Chedi Hotel is a perfect base from which to start. It is beside the river and is very peaceful which is exactly what is needed coming in off the bustling streets in Chang Mai. The rooms are very tastefully decorated and the hotel is very well designed and decorated to a very high standard. The staff here are another jewel in the crown, they are the epitome of Thai hospitality, friendly and helpful. Breakfast is a real treat and you can sit by the river and relax in the morning! We had a very tasty lunch twice and cocktails in the evening. All very good value for the level of service and surroundings. Nothing bad to say about this hotel!!

The Chedi Chiang Mai is boutique hotel perfection personified! If less is more, the Chedi's distinctive style is "most"! Quietly elegant and modern without being off- putting, the hotel is a serene oasis in middle of the hustle bustle of Chiang Mai. We stayed in a Chedi suite which includes lounge access, free mini-bar (including alcohol) and even laundry service! Upon arrival and departure we were greeted by the hotel manager, Stefan Noll, to whom I wholeheartedly credit the Chedi's success. Here is an example of management that cares which trickles down to it's employees. If you are in Chiang Mai, and want to spoil yourself, go for the Chedi. You won't regret it!

The Chedi is lovely! No other way of describing it. Tranquil ponds with vases holding lotus blossums during the day and candles at night. (Apparently a staff person takes a small boat out to make the change twice a day). The decor is minimalist, carefully arranged and most appealing. The accommodating staff are very friendly and informative. Our room ovelooked the pool and the river and was very quiet and comfortable. Breakfast was beaurtifully presented with a choice of several hot items prepared to order. The Chedi is on the edge of the old city area so is a considerable walk to some of the sights - but the journey is an experience in itself.

Over the last two years I have stayed at The Chedi Chiang Mai five times and each time the experience has been very good. I have been tempted to try different hotels, but each time I cannot resist returning to this usually peaceful 5 star oasis. Firstly, the overall design of the place with its water features, airy space, colonnades, and low rise buildings, etc is attractive. It reminds me of the Sukhothai in Bangkok, not surprising since both had the same architects/designers. Then there is the incredibly attentive and friendly staff, many of whom have been here for all my visits - a very encouraging sign. If there is one area that could do with improvement it is the quality of the food which seems to have waned. The facilities here are just excellent: a fully equipped commercial standard gym, a large swimming pool with lots of lounges, a spa, and large rooms with balconies overlooking the gardens through to the river. The hotel is located on the fringe of the old city, outside what remains of the ancient walls, but almost across the road from the night market. The only negative has been that on my most recent visit the peace was broken by a species of birds, probably housed in an adjacent property, which started screeching at 4:30 am every morning and didn't cease until sunrise (about an hour later). Then there was the noise of some sort of pile driving works across the river that started in the morning and persisted for most of the day, disturbing the peace around the pool area. I hope that these are only temporary disturbances.

Room Tip: I always stay in rooms on level 4 starting at 421, because these are the farthest from the busy road...
