Hi

We went to Chiang Mai Zoo and aquarium about 13 August.

If you want to visit both the Zoo and aquarium it's a bit cheaper to purchase the tickets upon arrival.

One thing to remember when visiting is that you will have your hand in your pockets all the time. The panda exhibit is 100 bhat each (and only two pandas) but as we hadn't seen pandas before it was worth it. The aquarium is an additional charge but if you have visited other world class aquariums you would be disappointed with the standard of this one.

There is a charge for the tourist carts around the zoo, elephant rides (and food), and quite a few of the attractions have either just a few animals or an empty exhibit due to renovations (or exhibits requiring renovation). I thought the zoo would be one place to escape the market stalls. I was wrong.

Although the place is worth a look, it's very much apparent the place requires a lot of work to bring it up to the standard it once was.

The zoo is very large and takes awhile to get around. There are buses and a mono rail to help you get around. It's abit run down and there are some sad sites likes the elephant chained waiting for tourists to feed them sugar cane. There is a separate charge for lots of things. I wouldn't bother going again

-520 baht for zoo+aquarium
or
-100 baht for zoo alone
-100 baht to see the two pandas
-10-20 baht to feed one of various animals

Highlights:
-pandas were great and worth the money
-hippos, jaguars and leopards, primates all close up amd fascinating
-staff friendly
-price for zoo is great and includes free bus rides

Negatives:
-some animals looked cramped
-the park is quite challenging physically
-the aquarium was slightly disappointing

We spent a really happy day at the zoo with our 15 year old son. The animals seemed very well cared for and happy. We were able to get really close to all the animals much better than in British zoos. A bus provided assistance to get round when the heat got too much because its very hilly, but you can get on and off as you please. My son loved feeding the animals and the highlight was seeing the pandas, who were both active and I can't believe we got so close. This was one of the best zoo trips I have ever been on. Some bits seemed a bit tired, the penguins and the children's bit, but overall really worth the trip. Go early in the day while it quiet and cool.
