Great owner, however bad rooms

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Aug 2012
I agree the hotel owner is great and makes the stay comfortable and pleasant, however this review is about the actual room. The room I had gotten was a standard basic, no windows in the room and a queen bed. The room is basic, the tv is not flat screen and not all the channels even work on the tv. The telephone in the room cannot dial out and need to go down to reception to dial out. The bathroom is horrible!! Absolutely disgusting. Mold everywhere, the rack where they place the shampoo bottles was rusted. Only 2 bath towels are given and even those look very worn out and old and aren't even white. Wear your flip-flops in the shower if going to stay here. Considering the hotel is only 5 years old, it's been worn down a lot. Either that or the cleaning staff need to do a better job and start using bleach.

Breakfast is included along with free wi-fi. Breakfast is basic. Toast, cookies, fruits and coffee.
They do have a dog downstairs, but are kind enough to take him away if you're afraid/allergic to it.

Kem was helpful with booking attractions and tours and a ride back to the airport, however when I wanted to goto Doi Suthep and Khantoke dinner he mentioned to me that getting a taxi back would be hard and I wouldn't find it. Relying on that information I booked via him and went to Doi Suthep for 500 bahts, when in reality I could've just taken a taxi back for 60 bahts/person from there. For the Khantoke dinner there are plenty of taxis around that area to come back to.

The location is great and in walking distance to Old Chiang Mai and the night markets, however I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone if you're looking to relax and stay in a clean, comfortable hotel. I'd spend a few more dollars and go somewhere else.

Kem and his family made our stay in Chiang Mai so special. Nothing was too much trouble as Kem booked trips for us (with discounts), flagged down tuk-tuks, gave us advice about good restaurants/sights and even arranged for our washing to be done at a fantastic price. Breakfast on one day was sticky rice and mango which was really lovely. The hotel is very central, right next to the night market. A great place for a great price. Thank you so much for a great stay!

Kem is brilliant at orgainsing everything and not at all pushy on selling tours (everyone in Chiang mai wants to sell you tours to get commissions - hotels, guesthouses, taxi drivers). A great source of what you should pay to go places, we went off the beaten track to a town a few hours from Chiang Mai and he planned out the route for me.

Rooms are fine, we added a third bed to a double which was just a thin mattress on the floor, but nice place overall. The hotel is around a ten-fifteen minute walk to the old town, it is on a street very near to the night market.

I loved the Vanilla place guest house. Kem and Kathy are sweethearts, and Kem is like a bucket of knowledge. Along with happy there dog, always being excited to see you when you walk through the door. The rooms and rent are not expensive and the rooms are small and quant. Really enjoyed my stay here, I hope to be back soon, and when I do I will be staying here!

Our entire experience was great here! Kem and his wife are the definition of hospitality and friendliness. It was a safe, clean and basic accommodation, with good a good (but small) breakfast. Our only complaint was a VERY hard mattress. Otherwise, we were very happy with our stay here!

We are currently staying at the Vanilla Guest house and are very satisfied. The accommodation is very affordable...basic but very clean.
The owner Klem are absolutely bailouts hosts. They have bent over backwards organizing our time in Chiang Mai.
