“Best hotel I've stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2012

I spend about half my time travelling for work and stay in many five star hotels in Asia and elsewhere, and I think this is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The quality of the service was superb and the staff quickly remember who you are - the floor attendant will even come and open your door for you as you arrive on your floor. The room had a great view of the river and every night, complimentary snacks and fresh flowers are left in your room. The breakfast buffet by the river is amazing and the dinner at the riverside restaurant was also excellent. The shuttle boats to the Skytrain station and elsewhere are wonderful, and the trip across the river to the beautiful gym was great. I would be very happy to spend time here again.

We stayed for a week over the new year period and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel in itself is gracious and lovely but it is the staff of The Oriental that make it such an outstanding hotel. They go out of their way to care for and cosset you, but in a gentle, unobtrusive manner that is always appreciated. Our State room was spacious and comfortable and carefully looked after by housekeeping . The hotel's restaurants are all of good quality and cater for a wide range of tastes. In the busy season, one drawback is that obtaining a sunlounge around the pool can be a nightmare. We are repeat guests and wouldn't dream of staying elsewhere whilst in Bangkok. A warning though - if you leave this hotel and go straight to another, you will often find yourselves as we do exclaiming "this would never happen at The Oriental"!

From the airport pick-up to the departure on its shuttle boat the MOBK experience was outstanding. Every staff member we encountered was so very courteous and attentive. The ambience was as lovely as we remembered although it was rather busy with several wedding celebrations and promotional photoshoots particularly in the Authors' Lounge.
While not exactly flies in the ointment two points for consideration would be : the provision of complimentary internet services and a more extensive higher quality breakfast.
The room we had certainly was superb in all its appointments with perhaps a latch to secure the screen door to the beautiful bathroom.
In all we certainly hope to return when next in Bangkok.

We spent a week here over New Year's which was a truly lovely stay. We enjoyed all the restaurants except the Normandie, and entertained Bangkok friends twice in the hotel. We were also were frequent health club and spa users.

There are hotels with better breakfast buffets, and more flashy amenities, but none with as friendly and well trained staff as the Oriental. The cost of our suite was high, including service and tax $ 1850 around New Year's Eve, after which it went down to $ 1450....but the place was spacious and the view of the river unbeatable. One thing though, I strongly agree with other reviews that at this elevated price level high speed internet service should be included....as probably should an airport pickup.

A special treat was General Manager Jan's invitation to a reception with the Bangkok Symphony Orchastra on New Years Day in the Royal Ballroom. We meet some charming fellow guests there, and drank and eat so much that we ended up skipping dinner.

After a lovely relaxing Christmas break in Phuket we came to the old but beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok to see in the New Year. I cannot recommend the experience enough, the Oriental put on a spectacular evening, including the most amazing firework show launched off barges on the river... After which there was the most beautiful party celebrating the start of 2012. There were three separate dining experiences to be enjoyed beforehand with the same background theme running through. We had a seven course dinner in Lord Jim's... it was a triumph, the food was delicious and the surroundings sparkled as we ate our way through the amazing courses... each sorbet served on its own special ice carving, and the most amazing chocolate collection for desert. Behind the scenes must have been a nightmare, but to us it was perfect, thank you - we will do it again and bring our friends, maybe next year!

Room Tip: Author's suites are fab!
