This is a waterside boutique hotel in the centre of Bangkok, right across from Dock 13 (Tha Phra Athit) on the Phraya River. That's important, because you go to this dock and phone the hotel -- and they send the private launch to collect you from the dock. It's only about three minutes to cross the river, but they managed to greet us on the launch with wet facecloths and a fruitjuice cocktail. Elegance and service continued for the full four nights that we were there.
The hotel is a converted private palace from 100 years ago. The rooms have lovely wooden floors and ours had a huge tiled shower room (we could have invited friends!) with brass fittings and lavastone tiles. This century-old elegance is combined with air conditioning to ensure comfort.
There is a splendid pool -- again lavastone with plants bordering half of it. It all feels like Shangri La -- with waiter service. Breakfasts were included and huge: fruit, cereal, all kinds of pastry and bread options, and then a cooked breakfast or a Thai/Chinese rice porridge. We took an hour over breakfast and then waddled away, set up (for food) for the day.
Then we'd head for the hotel's dock and they'd take us over to Dock 13 (which is a 10 minute walk from Khaosan Rd, the heart of Tourist Bangkok). A short trip downstream on the frequent river buses (10 minutes; 30 Bhat for two = US$1) gets you to the Royal Palace and Emerald Temple and more). So the seclusion of staying in a hotel that can only be reached by private boat was no problem at all so far as getting around once we left the hotel -- and we knew that we had peace and serenity and beauty to come back to at the end of a steamy day of touristing. They say the boat service stops at midnight, but we were never out later that 10 PM so we had no problems there.
I believe a new hotel management company has just taken over - determined to maintain the high service standards but also increase occupancy (it was about 1/3 full when we were there, admittedly still in the rainy season - early Septeber - so fewer tourists in Bangkok) so they can stay in business and continue to provide this dream escape hotel.

Room tip: They only have 17 rooms, so they are all excellent

Dear preservation_guide,
Thank you very much for such a lovely review and our team here at Praya Palazzo are really happy to see you have enjoyed yourself.

Thank you for sharing your tips and advise to other travelers and you are indeed correct about our location. It is very convenient to be smack in the center of busy Bangkok in minutes but then also escape back to the hotel and chill-out.

The boats run indeed on a daily schedule till midnight but we provide any transfer to any traveller or guest at any hour if we have some advanced notice. In the very near future we will provide 24hr boat service so bookings are not anymore required and we will provide an inter-com service also at pier13 (Phra Arthit) so it is easier for guest to request a boat transfer so our guests do not have to carry the hotel mobile phone if they don't wish too.

Further more, we are also going to implement a "Personal Guide to Bangkok" for each guest staying with us which means a personalized journey through Bangkok will be possible with or with our your personal guide or butler.

Also, we will be refreshing the pool experience and create a better more interactive concept around the pool where there will be some sexy cocktails and interesting tapas style food. An integrated wine concept will also be available for guest seeking a nice glass of wine (or bottle...).

We hope you will be back to see these and experience these new additions.

Warmest wishes from our entire Praya Palazzo Team and many thanks again for staying with us here at our heritage hotel on the river.

Dear Djese,
Thank you very much for your kind words and we are very happy to learn that you have enjoyed your stay and that you will recommend our hotel to your friends too. This makes us very proud. We sincerely hope to welcome you back again or welcome any of your friends. Just drop us a line and we will ensure they are very well looked after.

Our group The Lifestyle Brand has recently taken over the management of Praya Palazzo and we will be upgrading the service quality and facilities over the next few months and re-launch a refreshed concept this December 2012 which will include improved boat transfers, many more exciting and vibrant experiences, upgraded culinary offering including a Thai Heritage Menu from early 1900's late 1800's, a great wine list, riverside dining, exciting pool service, better pricing and of course some small touches in the rooms themselves. Another great addition will be that each room will have a dedicated "Personal Guide to Bangkok" included which is like a butler on "steroids" whereby they could make your waffles in your room for breakfast but more interestingly can bring you to all corners of Bangkok or around the river for personalized journeys like a romantic Champagne Breakfast cruise to the Temple of Dawn for example.

Of course the unique Praya Palazzo spirit will remain and we will keep the positioning as a Heritage Boutique Riverside Hotel and continue to develop the brand and improve the hotel's look and feel.

Rest assured that no heavy construction will take place during this period so we welcome all travelers seeking a true epic heritage Bangkok experience and indulge in privacy and culture.

Again Djese, thank you very much for your kind words and we hope to welcome you back again soon. Safe travels....

I loved this unique hotel! It harks back to earlier times, both in it's river location and it's architecture, which made it feel almost Venetian. The place is especially beautiful at night, when it's lit up and all the river traffic has quieted down. However, the rooms have thresholds between chambers, and a pretty steep and wide step down into the bathroom. It was not easy for me to step down without help, and was definitely a big challenge for my elderly parents.

Great location, within walking distance to Khao San Road, after you take the hotel barge across the river to Pra Arthit.

Dear tigressj,

Thank you very much for such a lovely review; we are very happy that you liked the property and its surroundings.
I am sorry though that the layout and steps in the rooms were challenging for your parents. Indeed Praya Palazzo is an old mansion which was renovated to be as close to the original as possible and this explains why it is sometimes not suited to our contemporary standards of easy access.

I am glad that this did not prevent you from having a pleasant stay with us and thank you again for recommending us to other travelers.

Kind regards

We stayed for 2 nights in a Suite in August 2012.
The Palazzo is a lovely building that has been wonderfully restored. Unfortunately, the experience short of our expectations, especially consider the prices of the suite rooms: The "gallery" is few panels that share a short history of the house. The same space is the breakfast room and, during our stay, was also the dinner dining room. The beautiful main dining room was used for a private event one night (we were given a much reduced menu that night), and was the second night the dining room was simply unused. This was disappointing, as I had called to confirm the restaurant would be running normally during our stay--we were told it was. The library is a sofa in a hallway next to the noisy kitchen. Significantly, the quaint decor and flowers featured on the website were in stark contrast to our lovely, but quite spartan, modern room. We were told by reception that the advertised complimentary afternoon tea does not exist. There was also only 1 complimentary newspaper available for the whole hotel. The website highlights that they offer black-out curtains for the rooms, but they leave on hall lights on that shine right into the rooms (we turned them off but they kept getting turned back on).

Service was very friendly and helpful, but need more training and supervision. Meal orders were confused a dozen times at ours and other tables. We asked for a top-sheet for the bed but were told it was not possible. Food was OK, if a expensive, although the tiramisu (3 bites for 280Baht) was abismal.

Overall, the hotel has huge potential, but falls short of the website and overlooks most of the touches required of boutique and 4/5 star--especially considering the price of the suite rooms. Encouragingly, all of these could be fixed with strong management and through more representative advertising on the website.

Room tip: We took a suite room because of previous postings frustrated by the otherwise small rooms, but I'm not sure its worth it. They do include a nice bathtub though.

Dear travel_lots_01,

Thank you very much for making such a thorough review. I am glad that you liked the property and our friendly staff but regret that your overall stay fell below your expectations.
I am sorry that you felt our photos were misleading; it is very surprising to us because we usually get the reverse compliment from our guests: that the pictures do not convey the mansion’s real grandeur. Being an old private home, the public areas are limited and we make it clear that the Gallery, Library and Restaurant are connected. We describe the Gallery as a ‘series of narratives’ which it is and our pictures show that a few tables allow you to have a meal in it if you wish to do so.
As for the Suite itself, I am sure you are aware that pictures are used for illustration purposes, to portray a certain mood; in our case, early 20th century lifestyle. It seems you studied reviews and tips on this website, so you may also have seen the private pictures posted by Ashley H in April that show the Suite in question, with our standard set up.
The Restaurant was indeed used for a function on the first night of your stay but was available on the 2nd night and it is a pity that you did not ask our team if you had a doubt about it. Other in house guests enjoyed a lovely evening at Praya Dining that night.
We only provide a complimentary afternoon tea to thank guests for booking directly with us. It is available for the other guests of course, but at a charge. The third party website which you used to book wrote in his Dining section ‘Afternoon tea is offered’ and I agree that it is confusing, although we never mention it as included in the price or on our voucher. I have contacted them since and the text should be revised shortly.
Last, I am happy to report that we’ve reviewed our Tiramisu serving and guests can now enjoy it for a few more bites! Thank you for highlighting this to me.

Again, I am sorry that these disappointments lessened your experience but I hope you will remember the attentive service provided by our staff.

I remain at your disposal for any further discussion.

Kind regards

We stayed 2 nights at this nice property with dates back from 1926 ; the restoration has been done in a very lovely way ; all details have been chosen with knowledge . Room are maybe a little small for this category but you have all needed amenities .The service is quite good allthough maybe in the restaurant a little more thai friendliness could do. The check in was very warm and coming in by boat make it quite special . The boat was allways available when we needed it. From the pier you can catch the Cha Phraya express which brings to all interesting sites in BKK. In the evening you can relax at their small pool and look over the Chao Praya River and enjoy this little piece of art out of time. We would certainly recommend this place.
