“Great Ambience, Friendly Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

The hotel makes the Nepali experience last 24hours a day instead of the off again on again disruptions caused by returnng to one of the western, "plastic" hotels in town. The staff is very helpful and friendly. A lovely terrace in a Nepali setting offers a great spot for a coffee break or lunch. The location down an alley is actually good. It provides a quiet get away from the hussel and bussel of theThamel District yet is only a 3 short blocks to the main north-south shopping street. It is also only 4 short blocks to the starting point of Lonely Planet's main Kathmandu walk (see guide book). Along with visiting the 3 Dubar squares, I strongly reccomend this walk and the first half of their Braktapur walk. Also, of course, all the UN World Cultural Sites.

We chose the deluxe room as we were on our honeymoon, but the price definitely did not go hand in hand with the quality. The concept is good, but it was the middle of winter and while the entire room and bathroom was freezing and uncomfortable, our bed was overheated due to the huge number of hot water bottles placed within the bedsheets, which was very uncomfortable. The ambiance was very spooky at night and we always had a constant feeling of being watched. The room had several decorative windows which could easily be slid open from the corridor and anyone could have looked in! The water heater was often not working properly and in winter, the water is freezing cold, making brushing and washing up really uncomfortable! The electricity also went off at times, and no back up system was installed, which was inconvenient. We were disappointed that at the steep rate which was charged for our room, we were not even provided with complimentary breakfast! Overall, the pictures look a lot better than what the real thing is, but next time we'd prefer to stay someplace else.

Room Tip: Do not choose the deluxe room if not necessary since no extra service is provided.

What a lovely place - a serene courtyard with a beautiful walled garden, secluded and quiet, yet 5mins walk from Thamel central. Easy to walk to the Palace, Hanuman Dohka or other central locations. The architecture is beautiful, the service full of charm is perfect and the restaurant serves great healthy Nepali food.

Room Tip: Inside courtyard view very quiet

A friend and I stayed in Kathmandu for a week in November 2011. Due to being mostly booked out, we could only get 4 nights at Kantipur. The other two hotels were Shanker and the Hyatt. Of the three, which were all great in their own ways, Kantipur was by far our favourite. The fact it is eco conscious was a total bonus.

The atmosphere of Kantipur is truly special. The wonderful architecture, the tucked away location in the midst of the Thamel district, and the friendly, helpful staff, all made our stay now a very fond memory.

We did spend a lot of time in the courtyard when back at the hotel. It is an open yet private space with a mix of eastern and western charm. A local street cat has also made occasional residence here and we unashamedly coaxed her with remnants of our breakfast fry up, to the chagrin of the staff (though they never made a display, it was obvious it was not appreciated, and Nepalese have a very different view to Westerners and Europeans of cats as pets). She is a mother of many litters and apparently spends half her little life pregnant. Life is hard for all in Nepal including the street cats, and being the animal lovers we are, couldn't help wanting to help her.

Some people have mentioned that the lighting is bad. Even though the eating areas were low lit, the lighting in our room was more than adequate. We had several wall lamps in addition to the ceiling lights (I think I counted about ten all up), and the en suite was also well lit, and also well ventilated with ceiling fan and a window. The en-suite was also modern and the cleaners were impeccable every day.

The room was large and had a lounging bench at the window as well as a coffee table with comfort chairs. The window overlooked an inner courtyard, and just outside the door across the corridor was a view down to our favourite courtyard that we found solace in every day. We had to take a room with a king bed due to the hotel being almost totally booked out, and it was very comfortable.

The food was excellent. There was a wide variety of Nepalese, Indian, and continental dishes, and always, they were very good. We both have a taste for fine dining so have high standards, and could not fault the food.

The proprietor, Bharrat, was a polite and amiable gentleman, who spent time in sit down conversations with his guests to ensure they were enjoying themselves and being looked after. He was not invasive in any way, rather, attentive and genuinely interested, like a host attending to many friends and acquaintances at a large party.

Kantipur was a haven to return to after walking the frenetic streets of Kathmandu each day.

Beautiful building and outside terrace, excellent service, clean and extra comfortable rooms, very peaceful... AND on top of that, environmental friendly! I wish I would have stayed longer!
