Hotel Osel : An Ideal Business Hotel In The Heart Of Thimpu
Review of Osel
Reviewed 7 May 2019
The capital city of Bhutan, Thimpu is easy to reach from Paro and Punakha. I was taken by surprise when we drove through Thimpu. It was unlike the other two towns I had visited in Bhutan. However, it was equally clean, non polluted and beautiful as any other city. Thimpu is an ideal city for tourists to break away from their itinerary. It is the largest city of Bhutan and reflects the culture and religion of Bhutan. My stay at Thimpu was at Hotel Osel which is located in the heart of the city. It is just off the main road and close to the local market. Hotel Osel is easy to reach and is one of the few properties in Thimpu which features amazing views. Being centrally located, the four star property is the perfect starting point for a Thimpu city tour. It is close to the business centre in Thimpu which is another reason why it is preferred by business travelers. Do not judge the hotel before you step in, it is a pretty big property located right in the middle of the city. I was welcomed with a traditional Bhutanese Green tea at the hotel.

Rooms

Hotel Osel has 35 rooms which are spacious, well appointed and beautifully designed. The rooms are pretty large and offer excellent views of the city. The hotel has four suites in addition to the deluxe rooms. The deluxe rooms are furnished with a modern touch and have an attached bathroom with a number of modern amenities. The room has a television, tea/coffee maker, mini bar, WiFi access, telephone, room heater and electronic personal safe. The room also has a dedicated work space. The bathroom is as good as the room (or even better!). First and foremost, the bathroom is huge. It is very clean and it has a separate space for bathing and dressing. The only drawback of the hotel is that the wooden flooring makes a lot of noise.

Public Spaces

The reception of the hotel is pretty big and welcoming. It has warm accents and there is a different color tone across different sections. There are numerous sofas and coffee tables arranged for guests to relax and unwind. The reception also has numerous newspapers and magazines for you to kill time. There is a restaurant, bar and a cafe. The hotel lobbies are decorated with traditional Bhutanese art and beautiful carpets that will attract your attention in no time.

Food

The restaurant has a 90 person capacity and they serve a buffet breakfast and dinner. The food quality is superior and there are a number of veg and non veg options. However, if you are a strict vegetarian, it is advisable to inform the hotel in advance so that they prepare separate dishes for you. The bar serves imported spirits as well as local drinks.

Verdict

The room service is very expensive for a four star property. Hence, try to avoid ordering any food or beverages in room. Apart from that, the service at the reception and the restaurant is excellent. If you want to soak in the city life of Bhutan, this is the hotel to be in. It is ideal for families, solo travelers, business travelers and for couples.

We stayed in the hotel for two nights and everything was super nice. The room is one of the largest rooms we've ever stayed in, the tv works, they have a large bath, and the food was better than most of the hotels we stayed in Bhutan.

Room tip: The rooms on the fourth floor have a view of the Sitting Buddha

The property is located in the middle of the town. You can reach the market area within 5 mins of walk. The rooms were very well maintained and the staff was very courteous. Infact, I believe, the courteousness is ingrained in the Bhutanese culture, so had no complaint.

Overall a pleasant stay at Osel. WiFi is strong in my room and at the hotel lobby. Breakfast is a simple buffet with eggs, tomatoes, sausages, coffee, tea, bread, 2 types of pastries. We ordered al a carte for dinner and it was very delicious. Opt for non-peak hours to get your hot shower.
