Amankora Thimpu

Review of Amankora
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
This trip I have started to understand the meaning of an Aman Junkie! It was a total of seven days of pampering, compassion and delicacy at Amankora resorts in Thimpu, Paro and Punakha. Amongst the three, each of them has unique characteristics that made them memorable, but generally the rooms are nearly identical. Located at the capital of Bhutan within the woods, Amankora Thimpu for me had the best interior design for common areas and impeccable service starting with the manager Rose, and their lovely welcome letter from all the Thimpu family. The detail given to dietary requirements as well as room temperature, and arranging the vehicle for the whole journey (water, blanket, ginger sweets for acclimatisation, lip balm, suncream etc..) included all the items you would dream and also never think of, in its finest quality. Daily excursions as well as extras offered by the hotel were also a good balance, which would allow you to have a balance of tranquil time and learning of Bhutan culture and Buddhism, if you would be interested. We have decided to have bit of both and in addition to the hiking, visiting the Thimpu city centre, art galleries, handmade paper factory and handmade weaving factory, we also enjoyed a lengthy talk on Buddhism with Mynak Trulku Rinpoche, which was a most satisfying experience. In addition, we were lucky that Dr. Akina Kazama was at Amankora Thimpu during our stay and enjoyed a meridian balancing session with her. She is a well known acupuncturist that combines various techniques and really helped me with certain health issues that were ongoing for some time. The dance show at Thimpu was the most interesting and entertaining show we have seen in Bhutan. All in all it is a right spot to begin your journey in Bhutan although you can also consider starting at Punakha, which is about two hours drive, for an easier adjustment to high altitude, and stay at Thimpu on way back to Paro.

Room Tip: It may take some time to adjust to high altitude so don't forget to drink a lot of ginger lemon...

Beautiful breathtaking place. Staff are wonderful and attentive. Lives up to the Aman expectations and some more. Love that the rooms are always done up when you leave for breakfast, or an outing. Personalised turn down service . Adds to the whole Bhutan experience

I loved my 7-night stay at 4 of the Amankora lodges. All the properties are beautiful, with an understated and very zen design (they're also very similar so don't expect huge variation from lodge to lodge). My favourites were Punakha (which has a very nice heated swimming pool, and a cozy meditation room in the main house which I used quite a bit), and Thimphu, which is just a short distance from town, located in a peaceful forest with a small stream running through it.

The staff at all the lodges were fantastic: hospitable, kind and very attentive. You really can't ask for more. Bhutan itself is among my favourite places I've ever travelled to: incredible nature, beautiful monuments and architecture, and shockingly few tourists. I hope it stays this way.

My itinerary, which we more or less planned day-by-day was:

Thimphu - Gangtey - Punakha - Punakha - Thimphu - Paro - Paro

My one bit of advice to any active traveller would be to organise a trek in addition to staying at the lodges: this is the one thing I felt I missed out on and will be sure to do next time.

Truly excellent experience. As so often with Aman resorts, the highlight of our stay was the tender love and care shown by the staff. We would like to call out our excellent guide, Karma, who consistently went above and beyond the call of duty, and our driver Theshen. Both were resourceful, proactive and joyful.

We had a fantastic stay at this majestic property set amongst woodlands high above the centre of Thimpu, the perfect escape from the city streets.
Our suite was everything I’d hoped for and more. The treatments were an exceptional standard and the entire team delivered a true Aman experience from start to finish.
A special thank you must go to Mongul for taking such great care of us and giving us plenty of background to life in Bhutan.
