Not far from Nyamata but several kilometres off the main road, is the Church of Ntarama. Here as well a major massacre took place. Inside the Church are some of the bones and coffins of the victims, though most have now been respectfully buried at the site. Adjacent to the Church is a room filled from floor to ceiling with the bloodspattered clothes of the victims, and the former Sunday School room where children were smashed against the wall, and women were burned alive. The site is well maintained in new gardens. As in other sites, photographs in the Churches are not allowed. There is no fee, but do give a donation to help with the upkeep and support the work of the volunteer guides. Well worth the diversion. A poignant reminder of the terrible events of the Rwandan genocide.
