Horse Racing in Mauritius

We had an awesome afternoon at the track. We sat in the general admission on the outside of the track (the inside of the track has no shade so I'd imagine it gets really hot). We had a few beers, took some bets and ate some nice snacks. The locals love their horse racing and its great to see everyone get excited and the horses enter the final straight. Loads of fun as something different away from the beaches.

Even if you don’t like horses, the race track is a good place to spend a couple of hours on saturday afternoon.
You can watch the races from the ground floor or from above.
Not a lot of places where you can buu something to eat, but cold drinks are available.
Entrance is free for women and children. Men pay 200 Rs.

We were told the race track is the second oldest in the world and what an experience it proved. Been to many race meetings in this country but enjoyed Mauritius as much. Make sure you turn up at the track dressed up and they will treat you like royalty. On arriving a track-attendant took control and put us in an upstairs outdoor seating area with a covered area overlooking the track near the finish line. He took us to the parade ring and to the trophy presentation after the seventh race.
The bar and tote betting is like in this country although it is fun to see a calculator used to work out your winnings. The race programme puts ours to shame and the entrance fee is about eight pounds.
Overall it's a great Saturday of fun. Get their early as the racing starts around 12:30.
