Definitely a must if you are in Mauritius. We went across to the grand stands if you are going to go to a box make sure you dress nice. We were fortunate enough to have one of the attendants show us where to go. We ended up going right up the top with the locals the atmosphere was great. Woman are free and a small fee for men but it's worth it.

We had a lovely day out mixing with locals For 200MUR entry (approx £5) for men and free entry for women. We had a few bets at the tote stands and then went to different parts of the track / bars to watch the races to get the best experience... we went up into the stand to watch horses parading which was very popular with the locals. We had read reviews about pic pockets and although didn't witness or encounter any we were very careful just in case- we had snacks in the bar upstairs with locals and a beer which were very cheap and very tasty. Everyone who spoke to us was so polite and friendly. You can book trips into private boxes but we decided they weren't for us as wanted a true Mauritian experience.

To watch the horse races it is the unique place in Mauritius. Events are held normally on Saturdays or Sundays. Crowded at times and many food, attraction and betting outlets.

Port Louis is alright. It's a glimpse of modern world in a place that's otherwise less than 3rd world.

There's a give of activities there, with youth out in numbers to enjoy the weekend with friends. Take an opportunity to visit the market across the street. It's nothing to write home about but at least you can say you did visit for souvenir's sake.

We had lunch at one of the restaurants on the port and again, I must comment about the size of a drink, that being a glass of wine or cocktails, they're really dinkie sized.
