A trip to Marrakech isn't complete without a trip to Jemaa el-Fnaa. It is a bustling square full of experiences. I could see that some people might be overwhelmed by the assault on the senses, but my best advice would be to take it in your stride and just try and relax. Everywhere you walk you are either dodging snake charmers, monkeys, henna painters or storytellers, but that is it's charm. During the day you can get the most amazing fresh orange juice from the stalls or dive into the souks. By night the square really comes alive, thick with smoke from all of the kebab vendors. Walk with confidence and just enjoy yourself!

Worth a visit and a superb locating point. If you can see the J'maa tower you can always find your way around the centre of the city.

We had been told that this square is a crazy place to go in the evenings and especially on Saturdays.

We went twice and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was full of locals and there were snake charmers, cage fighters, birds of prey, drummers, dancers, henna tattooists, fortune tellers, water sellers and thousands of people.
At about 5 pm the traders arrive with their stalls on carts and erect about 100 street food stalls and tables and chairs. Of course they try to drag you in but in a very good-natured way. Of course if you try to take a photo they want a tip- 50 pence will do.
There are also loads of juice stalls and tourists shops and also the famous tourist horses and carts.
And we saw no evidence of pick-pockets or danger

Our only complaint is that none of the restaurants around the square sell alcohol for we would have loved to go up onto the many roof terraces for a beer and to watch the spectacle

Many years ago this was a market area for both locals and tourists. Now it is just for tourists and I suppose a "must see" if you are in Marrakech, but unfortunately not very charming or "authentic" - a bit sad.
