I went on a 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga/The Sahara. Our guide, Adell, was fantastic and was incredibly helpful and accommodating. We stopped at several interesting and beautiful sites along the way, including Ouarzazate, the Dades Gorge, Toudra Gorge, and Rose Valley, and the Atlas Mountains (the second highest point in Africa). The best part of the trip was camping in the desert and looking at the millions of stars!

I would like to express my gratitude to Mr Adel our expert guide for taking us on this wonderfull 3 day journey to the Sahra desert. We drove from Marrakech through the Atlas mountains, stopping of at some lovely restuarants. We had a guided tour in Gorge de Dedes and went to a Berber house, it was really interesting.
We finaly reached the Sahara after the long drive through the breathtaking beauty of the Morrocan countryside,
In perfect time to witness the sunset whilst riding a camel over the endless dunes of the desert. We stayed in a Berber camp where we ate good food sat round the fire and played music.
I was truly amazed by the whole experience and strongly recommend this trip to all.

I will definatly be coming back and l'm very satisfyed with the service! Thankyou Adel.

We went for a 2 days 1 night trip. The trip is sold via various agents, riads, etc. and costs between 500dh and 750dh per person depending on your haggling, where you book etc. But, take some spending money with you, you will need it!

The itinerary: pick up outside your riad (or close enough) at 7am. On a minibus with about 20 people or so you are on your way on a loooooong drive to Zagora. There are various rest stops along the way for coffee, snacks, bathroom etc. Take some change for bathroom use.

On the way, you will be taken to the Ait Ben Haddou heritage site tour. There is a fee for the tour of about 20dh per person. This is fine and worth it. Then you will be taken to a pre-planned restaurant for lunch. The costs of the food is about 150dh per person. The food is fine but when you consider that you can buy a fillet steak of beef at Amaia in Gueliz for 180dh (highly recommended btw), this is a steep price for what you are getting.

We reached Zagora at around 6.30pm and then got on the camels to go to the camp site. We just missed sunset (not for a big lack of trying from the driver) but it was winter time when we went. In summer time there should be plenty of time.

At the camp site, you get some Moroccan mint tea and then proper Moroccan tagine. It is very nice - if there was more, I can't see there being much left over. The camp leaders provide some decent entertainment and when the lights are out the stars are in clear view. Would have been nice if the fire was going, but not sure why it wasn't on our trip. It gets super cold at night time in the desert and there is no heating so you may want to take some very warm clothing.

Next day, you wake up at half hour to sunrise. After sunrise you get a light breakfast (tea/cofee and bread and jam) and then you are on your way back. On the way back, it is a similar story. You can tell the driver to stop off for pictures whenever (but you may annoy the other travelers if you do this too often). You get to go stop off at 2000ft up the Atlas Mountains and take pictures. You can visit a random movie studio but we couldn't go in as they were filming at that time. Then you get taken to a shop where you try to get sold all manor of things, rugs, trinkets, etc. They do try a hard sell but they will not be offended if you say no. Then again it is time to go to an overpriced cafe for food. Home at around 7pm.

Whether you like this trip or hate it will depend a lot on the people you are with. It is a long time in a minibus with people you don't know. If you have a good group it will be good. If not, you will hate it.

The driver is great and very accommodating but in order to make the times, he has to play crazy taxi. If you can't handle an erratic/aggressive driving style, this trip is not for you. But just remember from my experience everybody seems to drive like a crazy person in Marrakech and probably Morocco as well.

I have been on tours before so I knew to expect all of the above so I have rated the trip accordingly. Most tours will be structured exactly the same and I would recommend this tour company having been with them (in any case it is much better than the rubbish the latest Apprentice candidates offered on their tour of London). If I were to go again, I would probably do a DIY trip to Zagora and then book a tour from there but that is not for everyone.
