“Surprisingly Quiet Location in the Medina”
Reviewed 22 April 2018 for a stay in April 2018

Arrival pick-up was effective with Mohammed meeting us on foot by the Hotel Batha (after a call to alert him of our arrival) and walking us through the medina to the unit. Later on in our stay, he was great in helping us find a driver for a Meknes/Volubilis/Moulay Idriss day-trip (highly recommended) and also helping us find someone to help transport our luggage back through the medina (via a cart) at the end of our stay. This unit has tremendous charm and personality, though it won't be for everyone due to the multiple and fairly narrow stairs. (I loved it, my travel partner less so.) Anybody over 5'6" will also have to be careful in the bathroom with the shower, due to its low door and ceiling. I was particularly pleased by the thoughtful touches of being provided a box of milk, a large container of bottled water and coffee and tea. Was great having that access before we tackled the medina for breakfast. The kitchen is on the main floor and also has a washing machine, which was helpful to have as we were on an extended trip. Though laundry detergent containers were present, I recommend bringing a plastic bag of your own detergent if you plan to do wash. There was no dryer, but a laundry basket and clothes pins were available to hang things up on the balcony, if desired. (We couldn't use that due to the rain so we just draped clothes over every available surface.) Each of the 3 bedrooms is on a different floor, so you don't hear noise from the other rooms (good if you have along someone who snores!). Beds were very comfortable, linens were in great condition and there were very-effective space heaters available throughout as needed. There are actually two different bathrooms, which was helpful. The shower had plenty of hot water. There's a lovely balcony with broad views of the city, but we probably used it less due to the stairs issue. There is also a living room seating area and free wi-fi. (We had to restart the modem after one particular rain storm, but no big deal.) We (surprisingly) heard NO noise from the medina whatsoever, however we did hear intermittent clanging and voices from the unit next door (there's a shared wall) as they had some somewhat noisy children. Things invariably died down by 10 or 11 p.m. though. I strongly recommend this as a Fes option and would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thanks, Steve, for your responsiveness to all our e-mail questions in advance - you were VERY helpful!

This apartment was adorable and in a great location in the Medina el Bali. I must warn you that the apartment is on several different floors and the blue tiled steps are uneven but for us, it added to the charm of the place. On the ground floor, is an extremely well equipped kitchen, including a coffee maker and George Foreman grill!

On the second level is the dining room, living room, bedroom and 1 1/2 baths. There is a satellite TV, but who watches TV when you have Fez at your door? The Wifi internet worked excellent! Up more stairs is the second and third bedroom and at the top, is a lovely terrace on the roof that overlooks the medina.

The owner, Steve, was very good at answering questions prior to our arrival and although he was out of the country, checked with us to make certain all was well with everything. He offered to have a taxi meet us at the train station, which was a big help. The driver dropped us at one of the gates, where the apartment manager, Mohamed, met us and we walked to the apartment - about 10 minutes. Mohamed was very helpful showing us throughout the apartment and places to visit in Fez on the map. He said that he was a phone call away should we need anything.

We loved the location of the apartment. We loved everything about he apartment! I must say though that the small neighbor children were a tad loud. Not having children or spending much time around them, we are not accustomed to the noise. Our first night, they played outside until 9:30. The second night until 9:00 and the last night, they were not outside at all. Their little voices were loud as they played with each other. All of this said, I would stay here again!! I credited that experience to the life and charm of staying in the medina.

This has been one of my favorite places that I have stayed in all of my 40 years of traveling!!

“Fantastic week...wish we could stay here longer”

We travel frequently throughout the world for months at a time and often rent flats and houses to give ourselves a break from hotels. Dar Jameel is one of the best houses we have ever rented in every way. Needless to say, the house is decorated with immaculate taste.
For two or four people the house is more than comfortably large with two double bedrooms and a single bedroom, one full bathroom with a shower and loo as well as a separate loo off the main room of the house. Plenty of hot water and super water pressure.
Everything in the house has been beautifully restored and thought through with all the modern conveniences, modern furniture suitable for the house and every comfort. TV, DVD and CD player, telephone, excellent wi-fi everywhere, washing machine, oven and range, hair driers, electric heaters and a/c in the top floor bedroom, electric blankets, a full range of kitchen appliances...and more.
Duvets and blankets on the beds, proper reading lights and bed tables, plenty of electric outlets and lights, wardrobes with hangers...
The kitchen has everything including sharp knives for cooking, everything you need to prepare a proper meal, cafetières, beautiful crockery you will want to take home, iron and ironing board, washing powder, washing up liquid, cooking oil, salt and pepper, coffee, tea, tea towels, paper towels...
The glory of the house is the two terraces on top, one lower with a table and chairs and a washing line, one higher up with a lounge sofa and canopy should you want to ward off the sun that floods the terrace for most of the day. We had our breakfast and lunch here every day in the sun and, yes, we had many long climbs up the narrow stairs from the ground floor kitchen to take everything up to the top, but it was worth it. And we stayed for hours afterwards enjoying the fabulous views of the medina and the mountains beyond from our seat.
The manager, Mohammed, collected us from the bus station and took us in a car to the Blue Gate where we were met by a man with a cart who transported our bags to Dar Jameel as we all followed him through the medina streets. Easy to follow. And actually. it is easy to find the house once you know how as it is literally a few steps from the main medina street, Talaa Seghira, yet very peaceful and seemingly secluded from the action. The pickup was included in the rental.
Mohammed gave us a free breakfast our first morning at Dar Houdou, their nearby hotel. He was always available if we needed any help...at the end of the telephone in the house. A maid arrived after four days to change the sheets and towels...with some gift Moroccan sweets.
Dar Jameel is perfectly located for very good and reasonable restaurants, for reaching all the sights and you can walk bravely everywhere. After the first two or three days, you will stop feeling lost and feel like you can navigate your way around intuitively to one of the two main roads through the medina.
Shopping for our food and other necessities was easy. We made one trip to the Carrefours Supermarket at the Borj Fes shopping centre in a taxi (7 MAD) to stock up. We shopped for fruit and veg every day at the open market at the end of Talaa Kebira near the Bab Boujloud and were always charged local prices. A ten minute walk away. Shopping was easy here.
We recommend Cafe Clock and The Ruined Garden for outstandingly good food, good ambience and reasonable prices. Both are easy to get to from the house and only ten minutes away.
Fes was a place where taxi drivers charged us real prices on the meter all the time without being asked.
We paid £300 for the week in December 2015 over the Christmas holiday without any of the normal ripoff supplements you are charged in other countries for Christmas stays. We tthoight this was fantastic value given the size and comfort and location of Dar Jameel. Communication with the owner, Steve was easy before we booked and he answered all our many queries before we booked.
How we wish we had a Dar Jameel in every country we visit.
Thank you Steve and Mohammed.

“Fantastic Fez holiday in traditional, cosy Medina house”

We truly enjoyed our two week Fez and Middle Atlas holiday. The house is a compact, traditional Fez house in the middle of the Medina. It is fully equipped and furnished and offers great view to medina and Fez hills. Kitchen and bathroom are clean. Beds are comfortable. WiFi is fast enough. House location is perfect. Steve and his staff are very helpful and professional. They provided us extra guidance for city and outdoor activities. We decided to choose the optional brekfast which was available at Steve's riad located just 6 min walk away. All in all this 2014 Christmas holiday was a fantastic time in a beautiful location.
