We came stressed to Dar Gnaoua – and left totally relaxed. Achmed and Rachid are probably the most friendly Moroccains we met on our trip. They were really helpful and accommodating.
The breakfast is tasty and the rooms vary from sweet to romantic dreams. The old house itself is perfectly renovated and the inner design more than tasteful. The view from the terrasse is awesome. Another plus: In the labyrinthy Medina of Fes, there are good way signs to Dar Gnaoua.

Dar Gnaoua is a wonderful place. It has been restored with impeccable taste, and prices are very reasonable. We had the lovely room at the top of the house, looking out to the terrace. Breakfast was delicious, as was the dinner we had one night on the terrace. Laurence is a great host, and Ahmed was wonderfully helpful and kind.

We booked this Riad for 1 night last minute based on the rave reviews of the place.

Whilst Ahmed was incredibly sweet and tried to accomadate us as much as possible, the Riad was absolutely freezing. The aircon heater did not function properly and none of our group had a very good sleep that night. The Riad is also quite far in and difficult to find and we did not find it conducive to pop in and out of and were afraid to come back too late at night. Beyond this the facilities were acceptable but unimpressive.

What really upset us to no end was the fact that at the beginning of our stay we were told the riad would be able to store our main luggage for us for 2 days so that we were able to go away with just backpacks on a weekend trip to Chefchouen. Everyone in the group packed accordingly but on the morning of our departure, we were told that the Riad would not be able to keep it. We even got Ahmad to phone the riad owner Lawrence whom we actually begged to store our 3 suitcases. We were rudely told that this was not possible. Absolutely no effort was made to accomadate our luggage situation despite agreeing to it the day before. Finally after the upsetting phone call and in a rush to catch our bus and with nowhere to leave our luggage,we contacted the riad in the old city that we had stayed in earlier that week, who happily agreed to store our luggage in their riad. We were forced to pull our heavy luggage through the old city and up hills to another riad. This experience left us all upset and we were shocked by how we were treated by the owner. We travelled through Morroco for 3 weeks and stayed at a number of Riads where everyone went out of their way to welcome and help us and besides this riad we did not have a single bad experience. We were truly horrified and would never stay here again or recommend that anyone stays in a place where guests are treated in such an appaling manner .

I can't recommend this place enough; it is gorgeous and the staff are very friendly. They make you feel at home, you can use the kitchen if you like yet it is like you are lounging in a restored palace. The riad is traditional and very beautiful, they spent 2 years restoring it. The owner Laurence and the staff bend over backwards to make sure that you are having a good time and to help you out with recommendations and getting you to where you want to go. There is a lovely terrace for breakfast, with a view of the city. We stayed in the top room, which is spacious and beautiful. Pick this room, it is very special. Arrange for a driver to pick you up and staff will meet you at the gate to walk you up to the riad, you will not be able to find it on your own the first time. The staff will ensure you are well acquainted with maps and directions and the riad is very well sign posted, better than most, so it's no problem to find your way back. The owner made excellent restaurant recommendations which we enjoyed and has a beautiful shop with lovely design items not the usual stuff available everywhere in the markets. It was also the most comfortable riad of our stay, with plenty of heaters and a nice soft bed- finally! As we were traveling over the new year and into January I was cold in all the other riads that we stayed at, but with several heaters here I was toasty and warm. Moroccan beds are usually very hard but this one was lovely. Wifi is available on the main floor. You can have a lovely traditional dinner in if you like as well, just ask in advance. They will also do laundry for you if you need a refresh. Excellent value for money and the warm staff make it a wonderful stay. It was the best of our visit in 5 roads which is saying something as they were all very good.

The house is absolutely beautiful; recently renovated in the traditional style, with intricate mosaics, stucco and painted cedar. The beds were comfortable, the showers hot, everything was spotlessly clean and we had everything we could need.

Laurence and Ahmed are very generous hosts and made us feel so at home. Their advice and help really set us up for the rest of our Moroccan adventure- I feel very lucky that this was our first stop!

The location is very convenient and close (5-15 minutes walk) to the souks, many restaurants, al-Karaouine, the woodwork museum and the tanneries. The roads are winding but there are signs pointing home at a few key locations which makes it very easy to navigate once you get the hang of it! On arrival (with a refresher the next morning) we were given a map, suggested sights to see and landmarks to look out for to get home. Extremely helpful, and we got to see some sights that are a little off the beaten track (including the incredible Palais Glawi).

Breakfast on the terrace is a real treat. Homemade yoghurt, fresh crepes, bottomless coffee and a view over the whole medina. On our last night we had a delicious dinner at the riad, prepared by a neighbour. Would definitely recommend doing this as it let us make the most of the terrace, relax and have some excellent home cooked food.

We had a wonderful stay and thoroughly recommend Dar Gnaoua for an oasis in the medina.
