I can not fault Dar Gnaoua in any way. The hosting was exceptional, we were met on arrival and shown all the routes we'd need to get to R'Cif and the main streets, this makes such a difference in a maze-like city such as Fez (friends in a nearby Riad were just given a small map and told 'good luck!'). Laurence and Hamid were so welcoming and have real pride in the establishment. The Riad itself is stunning, all the original character retained, but with a fresh modern feel. The bed was very comfy, and little thoughtful details were everywhere. The wifi signal was good.
The food we ate there was delicious, fresh and plentiful.
I liked the location, very central, and in a beautiful tangle of residential streets (it was easy to find the way once shown the landmarks by Hamid). I felt very safe there. It is also close to the ruined garden restaurant.
The Staff went out of their way to make our stay comfortable, helping us with travel information and helping our friends also (even though they were staying elsewhere).
This is the most welcoming place I've ever stayed, and I'll be returning to Fez just for the pleasure of staying here again.
Also, the view from the roof terrace is amazing!

Room Tip: The royal suite feels very luxurious and has a beautiful bathroom!

We really enjoyed our stay in a nice and spacious double room at the top of a historic building with beautiful details and furniture. Hidden gem! Great terrace where we had a delicious breakfast with fresh orange juice and a spectacular view over the Medina. Situated in the old Medina and near to the tourist attractions and small restaurants with excellent local food. We will return for sure!

My husband and I spent a night at Dar Gnaoua in March, 2015 and absolutely loved it. The riad is charming, authentic and beautifully ornate. The building was recently renovated so that its beauty has been restored to its full splendor, and it feels historic but also fresh and clean (not old or run down).
We stayed in the room on the top floor which provides excellent views of the rooftop terrace and city beyond. We also enjoyed the private bathroom (note that not all rooms have an en suite bathroom).
It's true that the route to the riad from the "main street" in the medina is complicated, but the owners have placed EXCELLENT signs all along the route, so it's actually not that hard to navigate. The staff are also very helpful at showing you how to get to/from the main street.
When we arrived Laurence spent quite a while showing us around the riad. He gave us an excellent map which we found very useful during our entire stay in Fez, and he did a great job of explaining where things were on the map.
We spent 3 nights total in Fez, and the second two nights were at another riad (close to Place Seffarine) which had been strongly recommended by a friend. That place was not available during our first night in Fez, so we decided to stay at Dar Gnaoua for the first night. If I were to go back, I would stay the entire time at Dar Gnaoua. Here are the reasons:
*The price is very competitive!
*The service is excellent.
*The room was beautiful, clean and comfortable.
*The location is close to a main street in the medina and close to Bab Rcif (one of the main gates). This was particularly important because most of the restaurants in the medina are near Bab Rcif, so it is easy to walk from the riad to restaurants.
*The main road near the riad stays busy until late at night (unlike other parts of the medina), so we actually felt more comfortable walking back from dinner to Dar Gnaoua than we did to our second riad near Place Seffarine.

Overall, it was an excellent stay and we would highly recommend it!!

Room Tip: The room on the top floor is gorgeous. It overlooks the terrace and the city beyond, and it also has a private bathroom.

A dar so beautifully renovated, I'm totally jealous, wish I had one like this. Tasteful, peaceful, with very friendly staff indeed, great driver Balak that toured us around on the day we needed some downwinding from this unique bustling medieval Fez-medina. Terrace very fine, bathroom excellent, breakfast good, bring some strawberries, airco good,. Laurence, do let me know when you want to sell it :)!

The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a good stay, even walking us to get our taxi in the morning and negotiating with the driver for us, very much appreciated. The riad had been beautifully restored and the view from the rooftop for breakfast in the morning was stunning!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Royal Suite, very spacious and had everything we needed.
