Owner description: The Botanical Garden of Algiers, Algeria History of the Garden In 1831, the French colony began undertaking remediation work on the marshlands in order to cultivate agricultural soil. By 1832, Governor General Antoine Avisard signed a decree that established a test garden in a place called El Hamma, east of Algiers. El Hamma provided a perfect plot for the agricultural plans due to its richness in water and cool climate near the sea. The aim of the garden was to serve as both a model farm and a test garden to install, acclimate and study various imported plant species. The garden’s main function in the beginning was diffusing useful plants for medicinal, economic and commercial purposes before scientific and horticultural activities were adopted. The zoological garden was created in 1900, under the initiative of Dr Joseph Ange who was the correspondent of the Paris Museum. By 1837, the garden’s capacity grew from 5 to 18 hectares with an increase

A beautiful historical garden where you can find a museum and a zoo. A lot of plants are endemic. Kids can play around and adults can find a quiet spot to rest. There is a subway or tramway to get there, you need to walk a while yet. Cars are parked opposite the Jardin D'essai, it costs 100dzd. Tickets to get in and tickets to enter the zoo or museum. Avoid throwing rubbish and don't forget that tiny grass is dreaming.

With direct access from the Sofitel this is a lovely place to get some air. It must be a welcome relief in the hot summer months when i expect it would be busier. At this time of the year it was empty though apart from groups of young men hanging around and making inappropriate noises. I wouldnt recommend walking here alone as a female or even 2 women although there is the odd security guard around the place.
The zoo is truly awful with small cages devoid of any greenery or stimulation for the animals. It should be shut down.

if you are alone or with your wife, girlfriend; this garden is amazing and if you are interested in plants and trees it could take you forever to finish this park.

Really nice place to walk and enjoy nature in the center of a busy city. Towering trees are a highlight. There are a few places to stop and get a drink or coffee or snack, too. Cheap entry.
