“Hidden gem for accommodation on Caye Caulker”

We stayed at Low Caye Cottages at the end of April.

We booked the cottage via Jeff. He provided all the information about the cottages, and answered questions about day trips and what to bring. Upon arrival at Caye Caulker, Michael was great - he gave us great tips about what to do on the island. Michael and Jeff were very accommodating when we mentioned that the two couples were arriving at separate times, and arranged a taxi service from the water taxi to the cottage.

The cottage was perfect for two couples, with queen beds in the bedroom and in the loft. It was finished to a high standard, everything was clean, and both towels and bath towels were provided which helped with packing! The kitchen was stocked with everything that you could need, from glasses to cookware.

The pool was great, and there were plenty of sun loungers. It is usually shared between the 4 cottages, but since we were the only ones staying, we had it to ourselves.

The cottages are a little bit off the beaten path, in a residential area toward the south end of the island (close to the small airport). This was great as it was quiet in the mornings and evenings.

We had the most amazing time and would recommend Low Caye Cottages for anyone visiting Caye Caulker.

“Best Visitor Accommodations on Caye Caulker”
Reviewed 26 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We stayed here for three warm, wonderful, relaxing nights in January and would definitely go back and stay again. Visited with my daughter and her college-age girlfriend during college winter break.

Low Caye (pron. KEY) Cottages is probably the most recently constructed property in which to stay on the island. You will be lucky if you are able to stay there when you visit Caye Caulker.

Linens and towels, and extra beach towels, were in excellent condition, and the property was perfectly new and clean. Certainly it was the nicest place to have stayed at on the island, in our view. It was a pleasure and a great catch to have been allowed to stay here in such a fantastic very well-made cabin with fragrant mahogany and buttonwood all around the interior, secure and air-tight (with screen doors and windows) against lizards and insects, although those were outside.

The dolphin faucet was so cute in the bathroom that had a nice walk in shower, and the rooms had comfortable mattresses, bedside tables, lamps, curtains and blinds, a clothes closet, and plenty of furniture, including a dining room set, a sofa and chair set and a television in the main room.

The property had all we needed for our stay, was outfitted like a hotel and it's clear the management has tried incredibly hard to build this beautiful and comfortable property for international visitors. The kitchen has clean water to drink in a water tank, so bringing a water bottle of your own to fill and sip all day is useful and the best way to stay constantly hydrated. Other water is clean for tooth-brushing and washing but not drinkable. We didn't use the kitchen facilities although the kitchen, made with beautiful wood cabinets and appliances, was brand new because we already had a preference for going out for short walks to our meals. Nice to have as an option, though.

It was a very quiet property in a residential neighborhood, and the neighboring guests in the three other cabins were comforting assets rather than intrusions on privacy. The shared pool has a pool guy to occasionally check on it and is new and fresh and clean. The outdoor wood chairs and lounges with cushions were very nice and new. The town is a short walk or bike ride away, with restaurants, shops of all kinds, bars, a pharmacy, the local school.

The stairs up to the loft were exciting to scale when you're young, if steep, so stairs could be an issue for some, although the main floor has the master bedroom. It could work for a family with young kids who can climb those stairs themselves to the loft, and there is space for a crib in the master bedroom. Sleeps four very comfortably. Also, there are a few stairs up from the street to the pool and entrance deck, not a biggie.

Caye Caulker island life is very relaxing and laid-back and attracts a younger crowd. We just went with the flow and enjoyed walking around, exploring, swimming, shopping, eating. Tours of many kinds on the water are available, to be sure. My idea was to hire our golf cart-driving taxi-driver Adrian to drive us around the island for a couple of hours at the beginning of our visit and show us local attractions. Then Michael, the manager, gave us nice new bicycles to drive around and we were mobile. I believe golf carts are rentable.

This property is owned by the Palmetto Management Company that owns several vacation hotel-style accommodations on the island. We were met by Adrian driving the golf cart taxi after the water-taxi ride when we arrived; a good idea, and one that made our move-in flawless. I can't think of anything I didn't like about this property. It was perfect for us.

What I remember most fondly, apart from the excellent accommodations, is the easygoing lifestyle. Caye Caulker is an island, and that must pose limitations for residents (if living there for a long time), and yet the island offers many advantages for tourists. The property created for us an atmosphere of peace and serenity, and that forced us to take a very restful break well away from normal sources of tension.

Despite being normally glued to all my internet things, I actually became less anxious and pressured without phone reception, which was rather spotty (we didn't even bother to try the internet)...All by itself, being offline for a stretch of days was remarkable. Yet, most adults on the island seemed to have cell-phones. We would have stayed longer, except we had planned a reef and rainforest vacation, and went to see the Mayan ruins, cave-tubing, zip-lining, and so also went inland to the San Ignacio area during our week visit to Belize.
