We chose this restaurant based on the great reviews, and we were not disappointed. The owner was very friendly, nice and helpful. The food was really good: we had chicken, pork chops and snapper, all prepared in different sauces, and everybody loved their choices, including the kids. Great value and large portions. Totally recommended!

The blackened snapper was by far my favorite meal in San Pedro. Came with a rice option and a potato option on the side. My husband ordered the jerk chicken which was good as well, but I would be more likely to recommend the snapper.

The place is small, but the service is great and the food is delicious. It's a few blocks back off the main beach area, I only found out about it because a local recommended it. I'm so glad they did it was a really fantastic meal.

By far the best food experience in Belize - the owner, Argyle, is very welcoming and entertaining. Hungry Grouper is without doubt the No 1 spor to eat and chill out in San Pedro!

The Grouper is not on one of the three north-south main drags and its prices are cheaper than comparable quality food choices. The place is small with about 10 tables. The floor is sand and the walls are brightly colored.

My wife and I found the place on one of our walks around town. We talked to the owner about making a reservation. He said he would take one but that it wouldn't matter. If we arrived at the appointed time and no table was available, we would have to wait until someone finished. He said he would keep an eye out for us at about the time we said we would arrive. A little weird but fitting for the Belizean laid back life style. One tends not to take life too seriously here.

When we arrived that night the place was full. We went in and put our name on the list and then we went out to the sidewalk to wait. There really is no room at the bar to sit and it's not a real bar. Just a half wall separating the kitchen from the seating area. Folks that were eating told us that the food was great and that they would be leaving shortly. We were on Belize time and in no particular hurry. Next door was a bar frequented by locals and across the street was a park where kids played footbol (soccer). Once a ball came over the park fence and rolled towards the restaurant.

It took a little while for the nice folks to finish up, pay and clear out. We sat next to the sidewalk at a table for two. It seems that there's a change over at about 7:30 p.m. Other than two other guys, nobody came into the place for about an hour and the place cleared out. At about 8:30 or 9:00 more people started arriving and the place started filling up again.

This place does not accept credit cards so bring cash. The other two guys did not have cash and one of them left for about half hour to find a cash machine that worked. The restaurant kept his appetizer hot while he was gone.

This is a place to relax with a good meal. The owner works hard but does not shy away from talking with patrons or people walking down the street. You feel like you're having a great meal in a friend's backyard.

The menu changes frequently depending on what the owner can get at the fish market. The fish is always fresh and the sauces and seasonings are varied. I ordered the blackened snapper. It was a good sized filet that was moist and flaky. The seasoning was terrific without an overuse of salt. It had a great, moderately hot finish. The rice and beans were very good and the slaw was drier than a typical American slaw because Belizean slaw uses little or no mayo. This slaw was tasty and refreshing.

Bottom line: This was the tastiest, most flavorful meal we ate during our 10 day stay. It was also the best value of price and quality. There are fancier and more expensive places with better views and ambiance on Ambergris but none of them top this place for food. This is one of the places to which we plan to return.

Had dinner at this quirky restaurant down the side street by the city sand soccer field - off Back Street. Wonderful friendly service. No one seems to have grouper this season, so the fish was snapper. The main attraction is not the fish but the cooking and the wonderful, flavorful sauces that top it! Good drinks added to the experience. You may have to wait for a table, as they take no reservations, BUT it's worth it!
