“Great beer, good pretzels”

Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garden
Ranked #1,060 of 3,556 Restaurants in Washington DC
Cuisines: Bar
Description: Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garden has become synonymous with beer in the district for our love of water, barley, hops, and yeast! We at Sauf Haus believe in Reinheitsgebot and Biergesetz- sometimes called the "German Beer Purity Law". In English, it's translation is a regulation concerning the production of beer in the Holy Roman Empire and its successor state, Germany. In the original text, the only ingredients that could be used in the production of beer were water, barley and hops. Today, we still celebrate the pure taste of German beer with our 16 German Drafts on tap all the time in the heart of Dupont Circle! Aside from our amazing beer selection, we also specialize in German favorites such as our famous Bavarian Soft Pretzels that can range anywhere from a personal size to our notorious 2 pound pretzel. With other snacks including Bauernwurst, Debreziner-Pork, and Beef Brisket Sliders- you'll never be at a loss for tasty eats at Sauf Haus. With our seasonal beertail list, giant pretzels, and a gorgeous outdoor space with long communal tables, we stick true to everything you could ask for in an authentic Bier Hall! Available for events and celebrations, host your next party with us in good taste and fun! With up to 450 guests, we can cater to you for parties both big and small. For after work drinks to a special event, come see how the German celebrate at Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garden!

Visited in the late afternoon on a Friday. The highest level, which was an open-air biergarten, was in full swing with a private party. The next level down the stairs was quiet and low key. Great German beer, including some which I had not seen on tap before.

I loved the atmosphere of the place. You can sit indoors and also have the experience of being outside at a true bier garten. I thought the selection of beers was rather limited and had trouble finding one I actually enjoyed. But the food was delicious and the music was good. I will definitely be going back though!

We decided to meet friends in the city and being beer lovers we wanted to find something new and different. Found Sauf Haus by searching top beirhauses in DC.

Got there around 5:15 pm on a Monday. Walked up to the top floor to find approximately 6 people there. Music blaring, HVAC blaring. Two bartenders just stood there looking as if you invaded their space by coming to the bar. Neither one of them greeted us. We sat down, after a few minutes we got our own menus. Picked out what we wanted and waited, again. Finally my husband went to the bar and ordered our beers and a pretzel. The bartender poured our beers and sat them on the bar. No, come and get them, no greeting. Nothing. We got up got our beers, pretzel was served. Pretzel was big, skimpy on sauces. The sauces that came with it were, beer cheese, chocolate, 2 kinds of mustard.

In a place like DC, service is everything and they don't have any. Period. Rude staff, subaverage atmosphere, loud, noisy and just bad. We will not be back.

Went expecting Oktoberfest, but instead it was a frat party. Honestly if you're over 25 years old you will be out of place. My 48 year old wife got ID'd, which she found very complimentary but honestly what's with that.... The beer was not bad and fairly priced. The food is very limited, but decent (as long as you're good with sausages) and fairly priced. If you're in college and looking for hang out place then I would recommend this place. If college was a time in your past then I would avoid the Bier Hall.

My husband and I stopped here while visiting DC. It's a cool spot with a good variety of German beers, huge pretzels, and sausages. We cannot comment on the food; the beer however, was pretty good. The vibe is nice too. It's a laid back place to enjoy a drink.
