A very affordable way to explore Chef Jose Andres cuisine not far from the Mall. Good option after a day at the museums before the dinner rush.

Jaleo is largely Spanish tapas fine dining and is one of the flagship concepts of Jose Andres, the celebrity chef who is based in DC. I have eaten here about 5 times. I love the patas bravas and the pan de tomate. Great selection of dishes and full bar. The place is widely popular and get easily get crowded . One option is to sit at the bar where the menu is the same as at the tables. A great dining choice in Penn Quarter.

We have been going to Jaleo for years, but we agreed that the food on this visit was better than ever. As people who have traveled to Spain numerous times, this is the closest we have found to real Spanish Tapas in the Balto/DC area. The broth of the seafood soup was richly developed, the butternut squash soup was the best I have ever tasted - savory and buttery. The gazpacho was an unusual combo of beets and tomatoes with goat cheese and pistachios, and it was delicious - definitely a gazpacho and not a borscht, but I don't know how they did it! One of our party had the JLT - a grilled sandwich with iberico ham. They declared it wonderful. We also got our must-haves to share - fried squid with garlic/squid ink aioli, shrimp in garlic, Patatas Bravas and grilled peppers in sherry sauce. All top-notch authentic Spanish tapas done expertly. This was a lunch birthday party, and was one of the best visits to Jaleo ever!

We don't have a Jose Andres restaurant in the northeast. So I chose Michelin starred Jaleo for NYE in DC. I also chose it because I wanted a non-traditional Washington option (choosing Old Ebbitts Grill for that for brunch the next day), that was moderately priced, fun and festive, and neither too formal nor too casual. Tapas and tinto at Jaleo was the perfect selection. The standouts where the olive oil, the spinach with pinenuts, and the papas bravas. It was packed with revelers but that did not distract the cheerful staff from efficiently serving and clearing.

I always Jaleo's. DC is one of their several locations. They also have a location in Bethesda, Arlington...Their tapas is consistently excellent and their sangria both red and white are fantastic.
