It's worthwhile to run along and you can go as far as you want. There is little to see nearby, yet still calming and not busy.

There are some beautiful parts of the Potomac and then there are some not-so-beautiful parts, but it does flow through our nation's capital, and overall, it's a definite scenic attraction.

There is a terrific bike trail along the river. Also good for walking.

You can sail, kayak, row, boat, take a river taxi, bike along the trails and explore the gardens and monuments along the river. The George Washington National Parkway runs along the Virginia bank of the river from Great Falls down to Mt. Vernon and is well worth the drive. Gorgeous.

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer. July was an extremely rainy month in DC and because of that, lots of debree came down river. I live here. And took my nephew and his family 3 children under the age of 7 for a river tour on the NIghtingale. It was a 45 minute cruise, left from Georgetown and cost $11/person for Adults and $6 for Kids. The boat was cosey, you could by drinks soft/hard and snacks. Sit in the shade or the sun and relax. The highlights were seeing the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument from the water. It went as far as the airport and turned around. The tour was taped and I even learned a few things. 45 minutes was just long enough. Everyone enjoyed the boat ride and I will do it again.
