Owner description: Though the Library of Congress doesn't own every book ever published, it sure has most of them, with 532 miles of shelves and 115 million items, with 7,000 added each working day.

We managed to register for a readers card. We could then enter the library to carry out some family research. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We accessed the 3 buildings via the tunnels which was really interesting. A great experience.

This is a FANTASTIC bldg with so much HISTORY. Took a 1 hour tour, but would definitely go back and spend more time after the tour. The tour guide was fantastic and did a great good, but 1 hour isn't enough time to REALLY soak it all in. The intricate details and patterns throughout are worth the time alone. Jefferson library is unbelievable, and how they came to be here is a interesting story on its own. I would plan on staying all day, and it wouldn't be a waste of time. Highly RECOMMEND you cost this bldg.

We took time to add this to our DC trip itinerary and didn't regret it. One of the key areas of the library in the Jefferson Building (1 of 3 buildings) is the main reading room with it's soaring dome and ornamental decoration. If you take a few more minutes to first obtain a free library card in the Monroe Building across the street, you will then be granted entrance to the main floor of the reading room. Otherwise, you are limited to a 2nd floor overlook which is not nearly as dynamic. Also in the Jefferson Building is the ornate entrance hall, Thomas Jefferson's original library which is the cornerstone of the Library of Congress, and an original Gutenberg Bible. We also viewed a special Bob Hope exhibit which was very worthwhile. No entrance charge so lines can easily form outside awaiting entrance.

The building itself is absolutely stunning, inside and out. We went upstairs and looked into the Library itself, such an amazing place. We really enjoyed our time here, I think that even our 14 year old was impressed.
