I remember the eruption nearly 40 years ago and its hard to imagine the force it took to cause the destruction that took place. To see the crater that was left is incredible. Be sure to look at the before and after photo at the gift shop to truly appreciate the force of nature.

Remembering the eruption in 1980 is nothing like visiting the great mountain. Seeing the impact and the regrowth over 35 years later really drives home the devastation and triumph in the area. The stories, the explanation regarding the explosion and how the learning and research is now being used to understand volcanos today is absolutely amazing.

the trip to the Visitors center is beautiful and a reasonable distance. The mountain (what's left of it) is truly awe inspiring, especially if you remember 1980.

approx 1 hr from main hwy; fascinating! My older teen sons were impressed. Very cool interpretation building. Awe inspiring to when you absorb what went on there just a few short years ago. Apparently many earthquakes happening again.

Truly amazing to see the volcano and the impacts of the eruption 37 years on still visible. We went along the trail from the Johnson Ridge observatory towards Spirit Lake for about 3 Miles. For late September it was warm a sunny affording good views of the summit and blast zone still apparent in the rocky lava deposits and remains of trees
