The Upper St. Croix River Valley is one of the Most Scenic Wild Rivers in the Country. Rent a car for a day or drive from Stillwater, MN (great local town) North on MN 95 to US 8, Head East about 3 miles and you find two great State Parks on opposite sides of the St. Croix river. Rent a canoe and paddle down the St. Croix for an afternoon. (Vendors pick you up and return you to your car). Picnic in one of the parks or along the river. Cross the river at Taylor's Falls (another small river town) to Wisconsin. Consider a paddleboat trip through the rock formations of the St. Croix Dalles, rock formations carved by glaciers. Travel East on Hwy 8 for more choices: 1. turn Left on Hwy "H" and travel 15 miles to Wilkins Bone Lake Bar & Resort. Great local food, (Best Pizza in the County) and enjoy views of beautiful Bone Lake from the patio (covered and open) or from many views inside the Bar/Restaurant. Return South to Hwy 8, head West and turn South on WI 35 to travel through more small towns. You have option of crossing St. Croix River in Osceola (about 15 miles) or Stillwater (about 30 miles). This trip is great any time of year. Fall color trips are a MUST.

While we preferred our trip to Stillwater, MN on the St. Croix River, over our time in Hudson, WI on the St. Croix River; Hudson does have a nice beach with restroom/changing facilities and and area to rinse off the sand after a day of play. For sight seeing and scenic views, Stillwater is the better option.

We are boating a lot on the st croix river. You can swim, stay overnight on the beach make a camp fire and meet other boaters. It' s a very good brake after a long week at work.

If had to pick a place that would be your definition of a paradise in terms of scenic beauty, calming effect, as well as the best spot for spending a summer day or weekend the St. Croix River would win out on all counts. This body of water is one of the most popular places in the state in terms of recreational options that run the gauntlet from great hiking trails, an awesome yet at times somewhat crowded spot for boating, numerous towns that are a great excuse for a "road trip". Throw in places for exceptional dining i.e Stillwater, Hudson, Red Wing and I have only one to say. What in the heck are you waiting for? If your vacation budget means more daytrips and or overnighters instead of a week at a over-priced resort, this is an option worth keeping in mind. Life is short. Don't be afraid to live a lttle.

You could easily spend three days working your way down the St Croix River! Taylors Falls, Stillwater, Hudson, Hasting, and Red Wing are just the main towns along the way. There is something for everyone along the way. My favorite destination is the Taylors Falls, MN area. You can take a river boat cruise, rent canoes, or my favorite which is to cross to the WI side and hike in their Interstate Park. Bring a good lunch, and some good hiking shoes and prepare to spend the day. The trails are dog friendly, but be sure to bring water along as it is considerable distance between water sources. The trails require good stamina but are worth it! The views from high above the river are breath taking and the paths through the woods and rocks are beautiful. The "Potholes" are natural wonders! Those located in the MN side of Interstate Park are more dramatic, and should be seen if you stop at the river boat.
