“so close to Christchurch but a world away”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

We spent just night here as a break from Christchurch.
The accommodation is great- very clean and well loved and cared for by the owners who live in an idyllic cottage next door.
We stayed in the double room with a private en suite which was lovely.
A great break with great hospitality, fresh eggs from the owners hens and close to a very safe and sandy beach. The shop nearby is the the longest continuously open shop and dates back to the 1870's The village boasts a school too! All quaint and old school.

We stayed here for 2 nights in de double bedroom with private bathroom. It is called a hostel, but because there are only 3 rooms you really feel like it's home. You have a very large kitchen and living room. Nice dining room. Open space. And it's not crowded.
It's a nice area to stay. We just loved it. You have a lot of space. It's clean. Everything you need is there. You only have to bring your own groceries, becaus in Okain's bay, there is not really much to find. Really value for money. (Remember it's not a 5 star hotel, but hostel).
Also swimming with the Hector's Dolphins is a great trip and not to far a drive from "Double Dutch".

Double Dutch was one of our favorite hostels in New Zealand, despite it's remote location. You will definitely need a car to get to the tiny, picturesque town of Okains Bay. The hostel is a small, purpose-built hostel situated next to the owners house. Everything is extremely well-kept, clean, and high quality. The kitchen and communal areas are amazing! The bedrooms are very nice, as were the communal bathrooms. We enjoyed staying here and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling in New Zealand who likes smaller, more laid-back hostel experiences. Okains Bay is an extremely small town, and aside from the beach and some hiking options, there isn't much to do there, however, the drive into the bay is stunning! Overall, an excellent hostel that stands out among the many great hostels of New Zealand!

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms, and they are all nice.

This is nothing like a backpackers - it is more like an upmarket B&B, except that you have to get your own breakfast! Immaculately clean and modern, very comfortable nicely made up beds. I think the maximum guest number is 7, so it will never be crowded and the amenities are ample. We stayed in the triple room which did not have an ensuite, but the bathroom is only shared with one other room. Highly recommended if you have your own transport (a little out of the way)

Amazing place! The hostel is small with only three rooms but with a great, clean and modern kitchen and big living area. The views from the hostel and the gardens are very nice and peaceful. The owners are very friendly and know a lot about the (activities in) the area. I would recommend this great backpacker to everyone! Did I already mention the fully made comfy beds? :-)
